I’m Neurodivergent. It took the first 35 years of life to figure out where those differences would best serve me, and those around me. Until then, it had seemed much like a curse. In the almost 23 years since, I’ve enjoyed doing my own thing, my own way, and using my strengths to do what I can for others, rather than getting hung up on my weaknesses. I wouldn’t change a thing. I see the world in a different way, and I think that allows me to write, speak and communicate in a different way, that, at least for some people…is to their liking. For over three decades I wanted to fix something that wasn’t broken. I just hadn’t discovered that I work just as perfectly as anyone else; I just do so in a different way. That, I have always suspected, is probably the reason I have always been for the underdog, and fought for those who were being treated differently, or unjustly. Whether anyone else ever saw me as different, I can’t say. I always knew it, though, and when you feel like you don’t belong…there is an unjust feeling to it, even if that feeling is one you are generating…yourself. In the end, or at least close to a quarter of a century ago, the paradigm flipped; I almost felt sorry for those who didn’t have a brain that perceived things like mine does, and saw the my unique “wiring harness” as a gift that can be purchased. That was life changing. In short, we need ALL of us to make this world work. If we all processed information exactly alike, saw things the same way, or felt like everyone else about everything…I suspect it would be like eating a basket full of snow white, styrofoam fruit. I don’t want to eat a basket full of snow white, styrofoam fruit, do you?
