What should Europe look like in 2050, and how do we get there?
In the latest #VoxTalks Economics episode, @ojblanchard1 (@MIT, @PSEinfo, @PIIE), one of the four leaders of CEPR's Europe 2050 Initiative, joined Tim Phillips at the PSE-CEPR Policy forum, to discuss why Europe needs to think beyond short-term reactions and focus on a long-term vision for its future.
As he puts it, a vision without the "plumbing" goes nowhere, while plumbing without vision leaves policymakers reacting to the next headline. The Europe 2050 project aims to bring those two together: a vision of where Europe wants to be in 25 years, alongside practical ideas for how to get there.
The response has been striking. After inviting around 50 economists and policymakers to contribute short policy papers, the project received 48 submissions. It is a strong indication of the potential for fresh thinking about Europe's future.

When China cannot sell as much as it used to in the United States, that trade has to go somewhere. One destination could be Europe.
It is another Wednesday episode from #VoxTalks Economics, recorded live at the PSE-CEPR Policy Forum 2026 in Paris. @pol_antras (@Harvard) and @BJavorcik (@OxfordEconDept, @EBRD) sat down with @timsvengali ahead of their keynote panel to discuss what redirected Chinese exports means for European producers, consumers and policymakers.
Drawing on new research, discussion explored which European countries and sectors face the greatest competitive pressure from redirected Chinese exports, and which consumers and firms stand to benefit from cheaper Chinese imports.
As Europe weighs how to respond to a changing global trading system, the conversation asks how policymakers can balance the gains from cheaper imports with support for sectors facing genuine competitive pressures.

In the latest #VoxTalks Economics Episode, recorded on 19 June 2026 at the PSE-CEPR Policy Forum in Paris, @GitaGopinath (@Harvard) and Philip Lane (@ecb) joined @timsvengali to discuss the third wave of Global Imbalances.
Twice before, global imbalances ended in major disruption: first with the Plaza Accord, then with the global financial crisis. So what makes this time different? The answer lies in where the risk sits.

What happens when you lose your job?
For younger workers, the assumption is often that with the right support they'll find another role. For workers over 50s, the conversation can quickly shift towards retirement instead. But should it?
In the latest #VoxTalks Economics, @timsvengali sits down with @BasvdKlaauw (@ResearchTI) to discuss his research into the STEP programme, an intensive job search assistance programme for unemployed workers over 50 in the Netherlands. The programme helped participants update their job search strategies and make better use of their professional networks, the same approaches younger workers often use naturally.
The findings raised important questions. The programme was most effective for better-educated workers and was tested during a recession. Would it have the same impact in today's labour market, where changing economic conditions and new technologies are reshaping how people find work?

Who kept the courts sitting and the streetlights lit when the state had almost no money to pay anyone?
In early 19th-century Britain, around two-thirds of people carrying out local government roles were unpaid. Yet the system worked.
In the latest #VoxTalks Economics episode, James Robinson (@HarrisPolicy) explains the idea of the 'embedded state'. Elite members of society took on unpaid public roles because they brought prestige and could lead to Parliament, promotion, or paid office. Positions without those incentives, such as jailer, had to be paid. Even more striking, the unpaid officials were often more productive than the paid ones.
Robinson argues this isn't just a historical curiosity. He points to modern Rwanda as another example of a high-capacity state built on similar principles. The lesson for anyone trying to make government work: start with the society, not the tax code.
