A huge thank you to @BCMohammedA for acting as translator/interpreter. Tonight’s event would not be possible without you. #WHPeaceTalk
Dear @Canada & @JustinTrudeau can we please help protect the @syriacivildef #WhiteHelmets 🙏🇨🇦❤️ #WHPeaceTalk #PeaceTalks2018
“We hope that you can help us pressure governments and international organizations so Syrians can enjoy democracy that you enjoy here. Use social media to expose atrocities happening in our country.” #WHPeaceTalk
“Unarmed & impartial, they’re on the side of life.”
“To save a life is to save all of humanity.”
@SyriaCivilDef #WHPeaceTalk
Wish I knew Arabic to give proper justice to the #WhiteHelmets.
White Helmets are comprised entirely of civilian volunteers who, in one way or another, have seen families, friends, and neighbours killed by the Syrian regime. They have saved 100K+ civilian lives todate. What heroicness! #WHPeaceTalk
“Our hope is that people here and across the globe will use social media to expose the atrocities in Syria. Show the true killers, and show the victims.” #WHPeaceTalk
We are now in the Q&A portion of the event! Q1: Have you ever lost hope?
Izdden: To save a life is to save all humanity. Hope is always there, even though the political climate is very disappointing, and even though every day we get extremely stressed and exhausted.” #WHPeaceTalk
Izdden: “Our wish is to be able to work without being shot at or without being targeted. Perhaps we are the only workers who are trying to lose their jobs.” #WHPeaceTalk #PeaceTalks2018
“4000 Syrians chose option 3, which gave birth to the #WhiteHelmets, who now operate based on 4 principles:
1. Humanity
2. Objectivity
3. Not taking sides
4. Independence”
#WHPeaceTalk
To date, 233 #WhiteHelmets volunteers have lost their lives. Their centres are the number one target for the Syrian regime and its Russian allies because they are the first responders and eyewitnesses to the crimes perpetrated. #WHPeaceTalk
Our third speaker, Nedal Izdden: “As displaced Syrians, we had 3 options: 1) run away and save ourselves, 2) fight back the regime together and try to get back what was taken away from us, and 3) humanitarian work - save others. #WHPeaceTalk
Almasri: “I joined the White Helmets because my brother was hit by a Syrian regime sniper. He died in front of my arms. I will never forget that moment; I was so helpless. That feeling of helplessness haunts you. That’s when I knew I had to help save others.” #WHPeaceTalk
Almasri: Women have now become an important part of White Helmets. Currently 400 women volunteering for the organization. 45 centres for women in Syria currently out of Syrian regime’s control. #WHPeaceTalk
We’re hearing about the incredible role that women in the #WhiteHelmets play. Today, there are more than 400 women leading rescue and training efforts throughout Syria. #WHPeaceTalk
