#MHM50 week 40: letter to Board of Ordnance 1832. This letter from a Guardian of the Parish of Quick, Saddleworth shows Royal Horse Artillery pensioner John Buckley had been admitted to #WRPLA. A John Buckley served with the RHA as a gunner during the Napoleonic Wars 1793-1815.

#MHM50 week 39: Corpse Way protests. A path through the #WRPLA site was used by the local community to take their dead for burial at All Saints graveyard. On 25 Sep 1831 30 policemen tried to prevent 2000 locals using the path. Ringleaders of the protest were charged with rioting

#MHM50 week 38: #MaryFrancesHeaton samplers. Mary was admittedto #WRPLA on 16 Sep 1837 after an incident at #Doncaster church. While contradictory information about her life was documented by others, Mary was certain of her own story which she stitched into her beautiful samplers

#MHM50 week 9: Isometric Drawing by James Walker c1862. James, an architect from Leeds, was admitted to #WRPLA Nov 1861. Part of his therapy was to continue drawing & he created this impressively detailed plan during his admission. The original printing block is in our collection

#MHM50 week 3: High Royds glass 1888-1988. There were eventually 4 West Riding hospitals; #WRPLA Wakefield (1818-1995), #Middlewood Sheffield (1872-1996), #HighRoyds Menston (1888-2003) & #StorthesHall Kirkburton (1904-1992). We have objects from all 4 Hospitals in our collection

#MHM50 week 2: #WRPLA model. This model made by Mr Ashworth shows the original 'H' shaped building that opened for 150 patients as the West Riding Pauper Lunatic Asylum in 1818. Eventually becoming #StanleyRoyd Hospital the building closed in 1995 & was redeveloped as housing.
