@WholeSchoolSEND @mandyjwilding @NDempseyDTA @WSSwestmids @WSSNorth “How do you know?” Encouraging talk about learning, and modelling questioning yourself - as a teacher - “is this the only way? Is there another way?” #WSSChatLIVE

@WholeSchoolSEND @mandyjwilding @NDempseyDTA @WSSwestmids @WSSNorth TAs and teachers should also work together to model appropriate social skills. I’ve seen some lovely examples of a colleagues ‘role-playing’ how to tell someone they’ve got something wrong, in a kind way. Relationships are key! #WSSChatLIVE

@WholeSchoolSEND @mardbennett @NDempseyDTA @WSSwestmids @WSSNorth #WSSChatLIVE Important to embed metacognitive instruction in the content of the lesson, communicate about the usefulness of this to pupils and ensure continuous training to keep it going

@WholeSchoolSEND @mandyjwilding @mardbennett @NDempseyDTA @WSSwestmids If TAs are leading interventions ensure that they have had appropriate training and understand the aims of the intervention. Make sure class teachers still have some direct time with SEND students and they are not only supported by a TA #WSSChatLIVE

@NDempseyDTA @WholeSchoolSEND @mandyjwilding @WSSwestmids @WSSNorth Maybe if the general ‘hubbub’ of the classroom was calmer, they might not need this? #WSSChatLIVE

@WholeSchoolSEND @mandyjwilding @mardbennett @NDempseyDTA @WSSwestmids Ensure TAs have regular updates on students and can also feedback to class teachers / SENCo on their observations. Include TAs as professionals, they have such an important but often undervalued role in supporting students. #WSSChatLIVE

Q7: The most effective way to support executive function in the classroom is to explicitly model and teach metacognitive strategies. When doing so, what principles are most important to bear in mind? #WSSChatLIVE @mandyjwilding @mardbennett @NDempseyDTA @WSSwestmids @WSSNorth

@WholeSchoolSEND @mandyjwilding @mardbennett @NDempseyDTA @WSSwestmids Consistency is so important, but also taking students with you - explaining what they will be doing in the lesson at the outset. They know what to expect and will be prepared. Now / Next, visuals, timeline for the morning / lesson. #WSSChatLIVE

@WholeSchoolSEND @mandyjwilding @mardbennett @WSSwestmids @WSSNorth #WSSChatLIVE We also use 'low arousal' approaches, i think it comes from social care, to keep the environment and approach minimal and focused on learning - reduces threat (perceived threat), superfluous cognitive load and helps keep a calm environment.

@WholeSchoolSEND @mandyjwilding @mardbennett @WSSwestmids @WSSNorth #WSSChatLIVE As long as routines are purposeful and consistent, i think it is going to differ from school to school. Having a really consistent start to every lesson i think is so helpful to lots of needs, but who doesn't benefit from a good start??
