In Oturulakoroa Village, Amuru District, families face prolonged drought, flooding & rocky ground that makes boreholes drilling fail.
The Result? Families share a shallow source with animals. For safer water, women & girls walk 3km daily carrying 20L jerrycans.
The cost: Girls miss school. Health risks rise. Long, lonely routes increase exposure to sexual violence & teenage pregnancy.
What starts as a water problem becomes an education, health & protection crisis.
But there IS a solution.
@Amref_Uganda has identified a viable source nearby. A solar-powered piped system can bring water home to Oturulakoroa.
Cost: More than pipes. It’s girls in school. Women safer. Families healthier. Climate resilience.
The water exists. Tech exists. The Communities are ready. We need partners to fund this venture.

As #WWWeek2026 approaches, meet Udimaa, a 19-year-old from Northern Ethiopia. Every day, she spends up to four hours fetching water for her family, a burden millions of women and girls in sub-Saharan Africa endure. This exhausting responsibility robs Udima of her education and her future. This must change. Denying girls access to clean water denies them the right to learn, grow, and fulfil their ambitions. We have the power and the responsibility to break this cycle. Now is the time to act and empower Udima and countless others to claim the future they deserve.
