What on earth is #Tiger doing to himself? Drove him from #RoyalPorthcawl back to his hotel in Cardiff, after he was apparently unwell. It was two days before the 1995 #WalkerCup & often think what if had had a serious crash would have changed the history of golf.
Without the @WalkerCup, there wouldn’t be a @jonescupinv
Bill Jones (Founder of the Jones Cup) explains how one historic moment led to one of the game’s great amateur events.

On the 🇬🇧🇮🇪 future #WalkerCup venues front, there really is only one choice:
The North Berwick Golf Club
I can’t believe NB has never hosted a Walker Cup. And frankly, I just don’t want to live in a world where we never get to see the best amateurs in the world trying to close matches on 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 here - that may be the most compelling stretch of match play golf holes on the planet.
This needs to happen in my lifetime.

Far and away the most popular choice for a future #WalkerCup venue in last night’s survey (and my own runner up pick after my homer choice of Sleepy Hollow) was Fishers Island.
And make no mistake, Fishers would be an incredible venue for a this event. The logistics would be but doable, and the reward of seeing guys load up and try to drive it into the Punchbowl on 4 would make any of those challenges worthwhile.
Count me in for a throwback Walker Cup on Fishers Island. #WalkerCupWeek

To cap #WalkerCupWeek, I want to know: what course do you want to see host the #WalkerCup?
My dream:
🇺🇸🇬🇧🇮🇪 The 57th Walker Cup Match 🇺🇸🇬🇧🇮🇪
🇺🇸🇬🇧🇮🇪 Sleepy Hollow Country Club 🇺🇸🇬🇧🇮🇪
Being completely objective, Sleepy is the perfect Walker Cup host:
1. It’s a historic course (1911) designed and built by two of the game’s great architects (C.B. Macdonald & Seth Raynor).
2. It’s been renovated and modernized by the game’s greatest and most prolific modern restoration architect (Gil Hanse).
3. It’s proven capable of hosting an amateur national championship (the 2023 Mid-Amateur Championship won by Stewart Hagestad) both in terms of course quality and logistics.
4. It has an incredible super (Jonathan Heywood) and greens staff that will have the course playing to perfection.
5. It is an exceptional match play golf course that guarantees thrilling and compelling matches.
6. The Stanford White-designed Woodlea clubhouse can house all the players from both teams for the duration of the event.
7. It has an outstanding recently published history book (marginally relevant, but still….)
8. It has a tremendous membership that would go all out in support of the event and the players.
9. It’s a stunningly beautiful venue that players, fans and staff would all enjoy visiting.
So think about it, @USGA - Stewart Hagestad as captain of the 2038 U.S. Walker Cup team, returning to the site of his third Mid-Amateur victory! Let’s make this happen!

One last future #WalkerCup venue for discussion, and perhaps the most notable of all:
In 2028, the 52nd Walker Cup Match will be held at the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort. This will be the first time ever that the Match is held at a publicly accessible venue on American soil. Every previous U.S. host has been a private club.
While it has not yet been announced which of the five Bandon courses will host all or part of the event (my vote would go to Pacific Dunes or Old Macdonald), it almost doesn’t matter, as they are all terrific match play courses.
This is going to be a fantastic event. #WalkerCupWeek

Coming off a memorable run at the #USAmateur and the #WalkerCup, @golfniall1 throws out the ceremonial pitch prior to the #Giants game at @OracleParkSF. @UNCmensGolf @USGA

Throughout this #WalkerCupWeek, we’ve discussed most of the future #WalkerCup venues like Lahinch (2026), Princes (2030), Chicago (2036) and Pine Valley (2044), but one we haven’t mentioned:
Oakmont Country Club will host the 54th Walker Cup Match in 2032, and most assuredly, it will be absolutely awesome. Oakmont is the quintessential American tournament venue, and has deep Walker Cup connections: William Clay Fownes, son of Oakmont’s founder Henry Clay Fownes and the second president of the club, was the playing captain of the very first American Walker Cup team at NGLA in 1922 and a team member in 1922.
Given the number of @USGA tournaments Oakmont has hosted and the W.C. Fownes connection, it’s surprising Oakmont has never held a Walker Cup previously, but I expect they’ll make up for lost time in a few years by serving up one an incredible venue for this historic event.

As we close out #WalkerCupWeek tonight, here are a few final shots from around Cypress Point - I truly hope we get to see more amateur golf at this wonderful venue before too long.
Tonight, we’ll look at some future #WalkerCup venues of both the actual and the wish-list kind.

While I’ll be looking forward to every future #WalkerCup including next year’s at Lahinch, one that I am especially excited for is 2030 in southeast England at Princes Golf Club.
In July of 1943, RAF Commander Percy Belgrave “Laddie” Lucas was hit by enemy fire in a Spitfire over northern France. His engine died over the English Channel and smoke began filling the cockpit. His chances of survival were slim.
But Lucas, who played on two Walker Cup teams in 1947 at St. Andrews and 1949 at Winged Foot, where he was a playing captain, was born in Sandwich, where his dad was a founding member at Princes, and knew the area and its golf courses well. So when he finally saw the Kent coast, he recognized the clubhouse at Princes and knew he might be able to land there.
As the plaque commemorating his adventure recounts, “He decided to use local knowledge and aim straight down the course. Always a little wayward off the tee, he missed six fairways before coming to rest beyond the boundary fence at the far end of the course.” He received a telegram the next day from his friend, Henry Longhurst, which read: “Driven out of bounds again Lucas.”
Princes is a wonderful English links and will be a terrific Walker Cup host, but for me, that little slice of history makes it a wonderful spot to have the Matches to honor old Laddie Lucas and his RAF brethren. #WalkerCupWeek
