You should know about hazards and it’s just as important to know how to cope with them. Prepare by knowing things like what to do in a rip; how to prevent gasp reflex in cold water; what tides & winds are best to paddle in.

Around 90% of drownings occur in open water. Oceans, rivers, lakes, waterholes and harbours may be cold, rough, moving, murky, aerated or choppy, making it more challenging than a pool. Always assess your own competency before entering open water.

If there’s no ladder or steps, the Push & Hook exit works well (pool edge, rocks or ledge). Push up with the upper body and hook a knee onto dry ground. In open water, the best place to exit could be on weed-covered rocks.

The Stationary surface water competency actually means floating (on front or back) & treading water. Practise these skills, start with flotation aids if needed. It is essential to be able to keep your airways out of the water.

This week’s #WaterCompetencyWednesday looks at breath control.
We can help ourselves to float or sink by increasing or decreasing the amount of air in our lungs. Controlling our breath when airways are underwater will ensure we don’t breath in water instead of air!
