At first sight, it appears to be just another call centre. But as one gets a closer look at the hurriedly scribbled notes on the desk, the words ‘#digitalarrest’, ‘#investmentfraud’, ‘WhatsApp call’, ‘impersonation’, confirm it isn’t any ordinary office.
Manned by trained police personnel in plain clothes it is, in fact, the control room for 1930 – the national helpline set up for victims of #cyberfraud. In #hyderabad this is run by the Telangana #cybercrime and Security Bureau (TGCSB). It offers support in Telugu, Hindi and English, 24×7.

If you wonder why #Police officials find it difficult to track down cyber criminals, a key reason is that the crooks have found some ingenious ways to mask their identity.
One such simple but (unfortunately) effective tactic is using what are known as mule bank accounts. These are mainly accounts registered in the names of other people but controlled by the #criminals to launder funds. By routing transactions through these accounts, the goons manage to remain anonymous.
In fact, investigators involved in @TGCyberBureau feel that at least five lakh mule accounts are being misused across #India.

About two months ago, the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) of the central govt made a shocking projection. In 2025, Indians are likely to lose more than Rs 1.2 lakh crore to cyber fraudsters. That is 0.7% of India’s GDP down the drain.
This is simply unacceptable to us at #TOI. To fight back, we have joined hands with the #Telangana Cyber Security Bureau to run a sustained campaign in the New Year to create a digital safety net around the people.
