🌿One of the UK’s top 5 native nectar & pollen producers.
🌿The flowers are hugely popular with many kinds of pollinating insects
🌿Tough stems provide support for other wildflowers and the seeds are food for many small birds

This week's #WeedoftheWeek is Burdock!
🌿Burdock produces thistle-like purple flowers popular with pollinators
🌿The seeds heads are surrounded by hooked bracts (modified leaves). These hook onto clothing or animal fur for dispersal, and were the inspiration behind Velcro!

🌿This native wildflower is a member of the parsley family.
🌿Great for insects - the umbel acts as a wide landing platform!

This 'weed' is so-called as their black hairy buds are clustered around an orange open flower much like a fox and her cubs. These #flowers are very attractive to #pollinators, due to their UV-reflectance - bees do not see well in red!

The national flower of the Isle of Man is in the top 10 for UK nectar producers, supporting 10 rare & threatened species. This incudes the cinnabar moth caterpillar which absorbs toxins from the plant for it's own defence! #weeds #wildflowers
