I was in Wales at the #WeekendOfMistakes just last month when the professor was mentioned during a trade/capital-flows debate.
Someone asked, ‘Who is Michael Pettis?’
Someone else remarked, ‘A nightclub owner!’
We all had a good laugh. @izakaminska can corroborate!
For those who are interested in the Chinese indie music scene, one of my favorite Beijing bands recently released their newest album.

#WeekendOfMistakes: Year Two—by @EdinburghLoM at @haycastle.
Was educational, charming, insightful and offered plenty to disagree about (I stood in between @izakaminska and #RussellNapier for 10 minutes as they challenged each other apropos China, USA, etc.—awesome!).

“Caution! Deep Waters” warns a sign on my trek to @haycastle for the first full day of the #WeekendOfMistakes by @EdinburghLoM.
Economists, journalists, academics, practitioners, historians all expounding on financial errors of the past—and where to find them now!
Also, beer.

We are delighted to announce the return of Weekend of Mistakes, after its sold-out first year, at @haycastletrust from 21st - 23rd March 2025! ✨

I spoke to mining (meek investment into future supply), gold (insurance not investment) and bitcoin (political liability as financial repression intensifies) on @MerrynSW’s panel at #WeekendOfMistakes.
(@LynAldenContact crashed our talk in spirit when her book was commended.)

The #WeekendOfMistakes was a quaint, charming collection of people and foibles.
Hosted at the #HayCastle on the border of Wales and England there was only one mistranslation of our common languages: I was (mis)heard to have prefaced my question to the moderator with, “Darling…”

Had a blast at the Weekend of Mistakes in beautiful Hay on Wye the past couple of days. Many insightful learnings including that banks can game absolutely everything, even becoming ethical (as proven by the Alison Rose debacle) . @Ian_Fraser warned car loan misselling could become more costly than the PPI scandal. @MerrynSW suggested a little bit of financial repression might not be such a bad thing if it means refocusing some share of national pensions on domestic investment. Jared Bibler reminded everyone that before there was crypto there were Icelandic banks. Nick Butler and @HelenHet20 brought idealistic net zero thinking back down to earth. And the ever insightful Russell Napier predicted growing tensions in Europe as nationalistic financial repression tendencies come head to head with the centralised structure of the ECB. And that’s not even the half of it. (Added bonus, there was snow!)

And that’s a wrap! Thank you for coming along with us through the #WeekendofMistakes at @haycastle. For more information on the speakers and their talks, visit the Hay Castle website: https://t.co/NJaW3jslTx See you again next year!
