#Morocco had pitched Chinese ZBL-08 aka Type-08, Armoured Personnel Carrier against India's DRDO Wheeled Armoured Platform (WhAP). According to the #DRDO news #WhAP 8x8 was selected for its superior quality, reliability, and performance during trials compared to the Chinese competitor. The WhAP also demonstrated superior capability with a 600hp Cummins engine and Allison automatic transmission, meeting high mobility requirements. Morocco chose the Indian platform also to diversify its military hardware suppliers, reducing reliance on China and replacing older French-supplied vehicles.
The reality is always far away from what is published in the military circle. Morocco’s WhAP (Wheeled Armored Platform) deal is a collaboration with India’s Tata Advanced Systems, not a direct Israeli arms deal. However, Israel is deeply involved in a crucial subsystem: the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces selected the Israeli defense firm #Elbit Systems to supply and integrate the combat turrets and firepower upgrades for these vehicles.
In 2024, Morocco partnered with India's Tata to manufacture 150 WhAP 8 × 8 armored vehicles locally. The production facility is located in Berrechid, near Casablanca. The Moroccan military contracted Elbit Systems to equip these vehicles with heavy-caliber turrets (105 mm and 120 mm), transforming the troop carriers into heavy fire-support vehicles or "tank destroyers" adapted for desert terrain.
This cooperation reflects Morocco's broader defense diversification under the Abraham Accords, which normalized diplomatic ties between Morocco and Israel. Elbit Systems is a major supplier for the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces, having also secured a deal to supply ATMOS 2000 self-propelled artillery systems.
While the Israeli lobby in Washington (such as AIPAC) routinely advocates for U.S. foreign policy that favors Israel-aligned Arab states and recognizes Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara, the WhAP vehicle turrets are straightforward corporate arms and technology contracts between the Moroccan government and Elbit Systems.
