This species is also commonly called Black Cod due to its similar body shape. However, it is not closely related to "true" cod species.

DYK: California halibut are sometimes ambicolored?
This means they have dark coloration on the normally white blind side. Completely ambicolored halibut have a "hook" (depression) behind the eye near the dorsal fin.

Our #WhatFishWednesday is the California Halibut (Paralichthys californicus)!
This species was first collected near San Diego, CA in the 19th century.
But fossil halibuts have been found in S. CA and date back to the late Pliocene (~1.8 mya).

This species has an extra large mouth for a flatfish and can live up to 30 years.

DYK: California sheephead change sexes as they grow?
Sheephead are born female and transition into males at various stages in their lifecycle as determined by environmental conditions and pressures.

This week our #WhatFishWednesday is the California Sheephead.
Male and females have different color patterns and body shapes. Males are larger, w/ black tail and head, reddish-orange midriff, red eyes and a fleshy forehead bump.

Our #whatfishwednesday is a sport fish found in the eastern Pacific.
It has a characteristic white chin and protruding canine teeth that allow it to pry hard shelled prey (urchins, lobsters, molluscs) from rocks.

Sixgill sharks have the widest distribution of all sharks, except maybe the great white.
They are found in both temperate and tropical regions
And have been known to dive over 6000 ft (1800 m) deep.

Our #WhatFishWednesday are the hexanchidae - cow sharks including #sixgills.
Their most distinctive feature is the presence of 6 or 7 gill slits.
These sharks also lack a nictitating membrane which is a translucent third eyelid found in most other sharks.

In the 1930s and 1940s, pacific sardines supported the largest fishery in the western hemisphere.
In the 1950s, there was a dramatic fishery collapse due to a combo of fishing pressure and poor ocean conditions.

I ended up getting stuck in a meeting so sorry for the delay! Our #whatfishwednesday is the Pacific Sardine (Sardinia’s sagax).
These are an important fisheries species and are known to have been important part of Native American fisheries.
Its Wednesday which means it’s time for #WhatFishWednesday! (I almost forgot 😦)
As Dr. Milton Love says one of his books, “(this fish).. are small, pelagic schooling fish with a a doomed story arc.”

It is one of the largest species in its genus and can live up to 55 years!

This week's #WhatFishWednesday is the Starry flounder, Platichthys stellatusa literally "starry flat fish".
Recognizable by alternating yellowish and dark bars on their dorsal, caudal, and anal fins. They also have star shaped scales! #fishfacts
