Sophie FaceTimed me one winter afternoon and asked if I would come over to her air bnb in Beachwood Cyn later that evening. It was unpredictable when she would call, but when she did, you knew it was important. I sat on her bed for a couple hours while we recorded some hooks and ideas into her usb mic and she danced in front of her laptop doing her signature wrist flicks up in the air with a knowing smile on her face. She had a way of instilling confidence in artists and making us feel really special and important. It didn’t matter if we were flat or cracking or singing nonsense. The vibe and authenticity were what mattered. She appreciated the juxtaposition between glossiness and imperfection. People started to trickle into the house, coming upstairs and she said nonchalantly “oh yeah, we’re having a party.” That wasn’t surprising cuz every session would turn into a party of sorts…it’s how she designed it and it’s the energy she wanted injected into her music. Logan and Chris from BC Kingdom and I bonded that night and ended up making “Why Lies” and “Live In Your Truth.” It was one of those memorable, joyful, mischievous nights with Sophie. I’m so glad I hugged her and danced with her that night. I didn’t know it would be the last time I saw her. Bravo to Benny and Emily for the courage and hard work of seeing this project through…your kindness and support have been really meaningful. You two are a gift and a class act. Renata, you absolutely smashed the visuals. Sophie is fortunate to have you all to continue her legacy in a manner that she would’ve been proud. “SOPHIE” out now. ♾️ https://t.co/3J05CQE0Jp
