Why return to the Moon?β¨The Moon is a natural laboratory. Artemis will study lunar ice (for water & fuel), test new technologies, and learn how to live off-Earth. Knowledge gained will help us reach Mars and beyond.β¨The Moon is our stepping stone! πβ‘οΈπͺβ¨#WhyTheMoon

8/8: There ARE reasons to go to the moon. Best place in the inner solar system for stuff that the 21st-century space economy needs. But the moon seems to offer little as a test bed for humans to Mars that can't be found on Earth or in Earth orbit. So again I ask: #WhyTheMoon?
7/8: But perhaps most importantly, the moon offers no chance to test the two most important technologies we need to develop for Mars: EDL and ISRU/prop manufacturing. Neither of which can be tested on the moon. Can only be tested on Earth or on Mars. #StateOfNASA #WhyTheMoon?
6/8: Moon first advocates point to polar ice as a means to provide cislunar propellant depos for the cislunar economy, but such infrastructure isn't a cost saver for a Mars mission (lunar propellant depots don't save delta-v on an Earth-to-Mars trip). #StateOfNASA #WhyTheMoon?
5/8: Moon first advocates assert the moon provides a place for testing where a quick return to safety is still possible. On this point, they aren't wrong, but so does the ISS, DSG, or even a remote Arctic station (both cheaper than a moon base). #StateOfNASA #WhyTheMoon?
4/8: Moon first advocates assert that the lunar surface is a good place to practice building a Mars base: It isn't. Lunar thermal/radiation/insolation are poor analogs. A cold arctic day better mimics Mars by all of these metrics than the moon does. #StateOfNASA #WhyTheMoon?
3/8: Some moon first advocates assert that the moon is a good low-g testbed for Martian equipment. It isn't. Lunar 0.12g is not a valid test case for martian 0.38g. Easier/better to validate the equipment in 1g here on Earth. #StateOfNASA #WhyTheMoon?
2/8: In my ~8 years in the space sector, I've been over this with engineers, scientists, astronauts and everyone in between. But I have yet to receive a valid answer: Why is there so much effort to position the moon as a prerequisite for humans to Mars? #StateOfNASA #WhyTheMoon?
1/8: With the #StateOfNASA and the FY2019 budget painting a picture of the year 2030 where there are still only robotic eyes gazing back at Earth from Mars, I have to ask the question: #WhyTheMoon?
Love you to the sun and back! #whythemoon no really why the moon and not the sun? Please explain your reasoning haha
