The sixth #WinnerWeekend | 1954 Milan Indians
In honor of the 70th anniversary that was celebrated yesterday, our sixth #WinnerWeekend are the 1954 Milan Indians. Tied 30-30 with the heavily favored Muncie Central Bearcats (enrollment 1,662), Milan (enrollment 161) shocked the state with Bobby Plump’s game winning shot. They would finish the storybook season with an impressive 28-2 record, and were honored by the HOF in 2004 with a team induction.
The fifth #WinnerWeekend | 1980 Broad Ripple Rockets
Led my future HOF inductee, Coach Bill Smith Sr., this proclaimed, “team of destiny”, won the semi-final over Marion with a Stacey Toran 57-foot buzzer beater. After that miraculous finish the only team standing in the Rockets’ way of a state title was the undefeated New Albany Bulldogs. Broad Ripple however would not falter and defeat New Albany 73-66 for the title.

The fourth #WinnerWeekend | 1977 East Chicago Roosevelt Rough Riders, Indiana’s 2nd Girls’ State Champion
The 1977 East Chicago Roosevelt girls’ basketball team led by future Miss Basketball LaTaunya Pollard’s 36 points, cruised to a state championship victory over Mt. Vernon (Fortville). It capped off an incredible 24-0 season for the Rough Riders.
The Third #WinnerWeekend | 1996 Girl’s State Champion: @cg_sports
The 1996 Center Grove Trojans dominated Indiana HS Girl’s basketball. Finishing the ‘95-‘96 season with a 25-2 record on a 16 game winning streak to win the state championship. Led behind freshman guard Emily Butler’s 15 points and double digit performances from Jennifer Martin and Liz Stansberry the Trojans defeated Valparaiso.

The Second #WinnerWeekend | 1989 Girls’ State Champion: @SHSWarriorettes
The battle tested; Scottsburg Warriorettes had a 24-1 record entering the 1989 Girls’ Basketball State Finals. Winning the first game over Noblesville, Scottsburg would take on Benton Central for the title. Despite a fourth quarter comeback from Benton Central that sent the game into overtime, the Warriorettes triumphed behind a 30-point performance from Indiana Miss Basketball, Renee Westmoreland and double-digit performances from Rachele Baker and Christy Robison.

The First #WinnerWeekend | 1990 Girls’ State Champion: @hnvikings
With the whole Huntington community behind them the 1989-90 Lady Vikings stampeded their way through their schedule, making their way to the state championship game with a record of 25-4. In their second consecutive state finals appearance Huntington North took on the favored and undefeated Bedford North Lawrence Stars for a State title. Led by Kamie Arnold and Diane Poulson’s combined 33 points the Lady Vikings fought off a late push by the Lady Stars to win 50-47.

The eighth #WinnerWeekend | 1932 New Castle Trojans
With the Boys’ State Finals today we present our final #WinnerWeekend. In honor of the Hall of Fame’s home, New Castle, we are honoring the Trojan’s first state champion team. Led by HOF coach Orville Hooker, New Castle had mounted an impressive 24-3 record heading into the State Finals, which included a last second shot victory over Muncie Central in the regional. In the championship game led by a balanced scoring attack the Trojans would go on to defeat Winamac 24-17 for their first state title. @NCTrojans
The seventh #WinnerWeekend | 1993 Jeffersonville Red Devils
Heading into the 1993 State Finals the Jeffersonville Red Devils had been to the finals six times but never won. However, this team who headed into the day at 27-2 looked to finally take the title home to Jeffersonville. In the first game, the Red Devils led by Brian Hanley’s 25 points defeated South Bend Saint Joseph. Hanley would impress again in the championship game. Behind his 22 points the Red Devils would overcome an early Ben Davis lead and come out on top 87-74.
The sixth #WinnerWeekend | 1972 Connersville Spartans
Led my future HOF inductee, Coach Myron Dickerson, and 1972 Mr. Basketball, Phil Cox, the resilient 1972 Connersville Spartans mounted an impressive 24-3 record heading into the state finals. The Spartans won the first game in a thrilling double over time battle against the 22-4 Jeffersonville Red Devils. The only thing standing in Connersville’s way of a state title was the heavily favored Gary Westside Cougars. However, backed by Larry Miller’s impressive 26 point performance the Spartans would not falter and defeat Westside 80-63, for their first state championship.
The fifth #WinnerWeekend | 1953 South Bend Central Bears
With the start of the Boys’ State Tournament this week, we present our first Boys’ state champion team to be covered on #WinnerWeekends. 70 years ago in front of a crowd of 14,983 people the South Bend Central Bears would win their first of two Indiana state titles. With 15 seconds left and a narrow 42-41 lead, Central gave up the ball to opponent Terre Haute Gerstmeyer. The Black Cats would put the ball in the hands of their star player, Harley Andrews, whose last second heave would narrowly miss. This propelled the Bears, led by Jack Quiggle’s 12 points, to their first state title.
The fourth #WinnerWeekend | 1976 Warsaw Lady Tigers, Indiana’s 1st Girls’ State Champion
In honor of the Girls’ State Championships today we thought it only be fitting for this #WinnerWeekend to be the team that started it all in Indiana HS Girls’ Basketball. The 1976 Warsaw Lady Tigers led by Chanda Kline’s 19 points and the first Indiana Miss Basketball, Judi Warren’s 17 points snapped Bloomfield’s 48 game win streak to win the title.

The Third #WinnerWeekend | 1994 Girls’ State Champion: Lake Central
The battle tested, Lake Central Lady Indians had the best record (23-1) of the four teams entering the 1994 Girls’ Basketball State Finals. Winning the first game over Columbus East, Lake Central would take on two-time defending State Champion, Kokomo. The game was a hard battle but Lake Central started the final eight minutes of the game behind ten. Highlighted by a valiant defensive performance that led to Kokomo scoring only 2 points in the fourth quarter, Lake Central would tie the game 40-40 with 1:53 to play. Then, with 17 seconds remaining in regulation Kristina Divjak (#35) would rebound her own miss and score giving Lake Central the lead until the very end ultimately winning 44-42. @LakeCentralGBB
The Second #WinnerWeekend
Led by Mistina Oliver and Tiffany Longsworth’s combined 37 points the 1992 Kokomo Lady Kats stormed back after being down 28-18 at halftime to win the State Title. Finishing the ‘91-‘92 season with a 26-1 record. Watch below Longsworth’s State title securing shot.
The First #WinnerWeekend
Led by Tina Boruff and Kelly Fitzgerald the 1983 Bedford North Lawrence Stars dominated Indiana HS Girl’s basketball. Finishing the ‘82-‘83 season with a 26-1 record and winning the State Championship in front of a then record crowd of 13,704 people.
It’s been a wild weekend.
