Deep ontological and esoteric themes. It has a complicated timeline. It has a character who swears and drinks. She's not a child, but she's far from adult. The theme of second chances isn't one for younger YA, that's about firsts. Yet #YAplus is put in the kids section. Wrong.

@VeroniKaboom Yep, everyone is talking about this lately and it's my personal battle. I write and constantly talk about #YAplus. My characters are 19-23 in my first two books, with issues to match...let's stop branding them YA then getting upset about sex and profanities. YA+ is grownup YA.
@margotwood @margotwood TOTALLY agree. My publisher has coined the phrase #YAplus after THE PATH KEEPER got accused of being too adult. Well it is, it's about a 19 year old and includes sex, drinking and profanities. It's not YA, and it's not adult... It's for older YA lovers who want more.
@atrueblood5 As a British writer, I never realised how contentious profanities in books is for US readers. Never got one complaint in the UK, but apparently a 19 year old saying rude words and having sex for fun is a huge no no. So my work is labelled #YAPlus now. 🤷♀️
@smenonbooks @atrueblood5 This is why my publisher has coined the term #YAplus. If it's YA, it should be appropriate for 14+, but if it's #YAplus expect older teen themes, swearing and sex. We definitely need to segment YA. It's too difficult for librarians, parents and readers to know what's a good fit.
@LillyMSantiago @laurenspieller Completety agree. In fact I was over at @Bibliophagist90 last week talking about #YAplus. Here's my article on why we need to bridge the gap. I write for older teens/early 20s but my books are in stores under YA because there's no other category 🤷♀️

@laurenspieller This is what happens when the publishing industry decides YA is 13-19 and NA doesn't exist. There's a huge gap for readers who want MCs aged 18-23. My work is classified #YAplus for this reason. It's for much older teens. We need to subcategorise YA and early 20s lit better!

YA is vital and teens deserve it, but for older teens who are approaching adulthood then there are books like #thepathkeeper and #YAplus is what it is. Still YA, plus more. More mature, more challenging and I hope something everyone can enjoy. 💜✨
