Part 2: WHY I TREKKED FROM UNILAG [YABA] TO OBALENDE-IKOYI
23/40) So my employer then reabsorbed me back as soon as
I returned from the UK.
But I was the one
who said I was leaving.
Because I was not feeling it anymore.
My priorities had changed. I had seen
life and been to the mountain top like Martin Luther King Jr and like Moses, God had shown me in advance what
the view of the Promised Land looked like.
So I told myself, there was no settling for less or going below the barest minimum.
Best value must be obtained and gotten for this new status.
Absent hard core reality of what the situation in Naija was truly like.
A case of dog eating dog in some instances
with few sane exceptions only. Sad.
But that's the reality on ground and took the 3MB trek to realise that.
24/40) Fast forward.
Me. Resigning from
a well-paying job.
No clear direction.
No safety net.
Just faith and pride.
25/40) What they offered me on return could barely cover:
Rent. A new ride.
Ikoyi/VI lifestyle.
I could have chosen
a less pressuring move.
Rent in Ikorodu, Ajegunle or Ikotun or Egbeda. And use Molue or the Yellow Buses in my suit and tie.
26/40) On that very day, I made a miscalculation.
Why did I go to Yaba?
27/40) A friend's dad was then LG Chairman for Yaba LCDA. She’s a lawyer. I had pitched her on buying equity in the "non-existent firm."
28/40) I had money when I left home.
Even ate at Unilag.
Mistake: I didn’t ask for the food price upfront.
29/40) I thought I’d have small change left for bus to Obalende.
I miscalculated.
Account went red.
30/40) That was my last savings. Pension, investments, landed property couldn’t save me in that moment.
And I could not beg.
31/40) God forbid I become a charity case.
Big brother. Big boy.
40k LinkedIn Followers.
"Jose not Mourinho".
32/40) Couldn’t tell siblings. They’d be mad
I let it get that bad.
Couldn’t call a mentor. They’d think it was finished for me.
33/40) So I decided:
I will walk from UNILAG GATE TO OBALENDE.
34/40) UNILAG. Domino’s. Sabo.
Panti. Then 3MB.
Heavy logs on the river. Sawdust burning.
Houses on water.
Broken bridge rails.
35/40) All I was thinking:
How did I get here?
First Class. Top 3% Commonwealth
Shared Scholar. Star boy. Walking in the sun
with nothing.
36/40) That was the longest Walk of Faith I’ve done. Apart from my high school marathon.
Brutal. Savage. Humbling.
37/40) It taught me:
Anyone can be in an unfortunate situation.
Never say never.
Life is a pot of beans.
38/40) Adeniji.
Sharp turn to Lagos Island. Obalende.
₦200 left. Not enough.
Bought pure water. Drank till I was full.
Tears had dried.
39/40) If @OPay_NG existed then, I would have borrowed to save face. But God had purpose for that walk.
To teach me perspective.
And why you don’t take foolish risks without
a strong base.
40/40) Life can happen to anyone. Even a first class graduate can trek from Yaba to Obalende.
Life can humble anyone.
Premium tears for a first class lawyer/UK Commonwealth Shared Scholar, as he takes
a walk of faith with freely flow hot tears of prayer -
Wondering how life got to such a point where he could barely afford tfare from Yaba to Obalende.
If you’re trekking now:
Don’t envy anyone’s crown. But Don't give up.
Keep pushing
and trusting God.
Na who give up lose.
God is ever faithful.

Some sad news today that after 120 years @YellowBuses will cease trading. We had this Alexander Dennis E40D, ADL Enviro 400MMC (H45/29F) join us for running day in May 2019. #yellowbus #yellowbuses #bournemouth
The end of an era for Bournemouth this evening with the last @YellowBuses rolling into the depot for the last time and no buses on the live tracker.
Thank you for the years of service.

A sad day and a big loss to #Bournemouth. After 120 years, #YellowBuses are no more.
We'll miss our Friday trips along the cliff-top to Hengistbury Head and Christchurch on the open topper. Thoughts with everyone at risk of losing their job.
