#zkAPI launched on October 1, and I barely see anyone mentioned about it. Because I think it’s more important than we think.
zkAPI is the missing payment layer, and one of the rare times the Ethereum Foundation shipped something with real use case.
The Foundation usually sits a few layers back from the user: research, clients, standards, grants, tooling.
zkAPI takes a shorter path. The February idea from Vitalik and Davide Crapis became a mainnet vault, a client, a server, and a chat app.
It solves one concrete problem. An AI API today ties a key to an account, the account to a card, and a year of prompts to one profile.
zkAPI splits that apart.
– You deposit ETH or USDC once. The balance becomes a private note only you can spend.
– Your machine generates a proof that the note is funded, without showing which note.
– The server issues a short-lived key with a spending cap. When it expires, the note is charged.
– The provider still reads the prompt. The payment server only knows the session is valid and what it cost. The chain only sees the deposit and the withdrawal.
It matters because agents will call models constantly.
A signed wallet transfer on every request leaks the strategy. zkAPI does not hide the content but it hides the billing record.
Exit does not depend on the server, because the vault verifies the proof itself. The protocol is still experimental, and a public deposit still links your wallet unless you shield first.
What projetcs catching that narrative? 👇🏻
1/ ETH catches the settlement layer. Deposits and gas sit on mainnet, and zkAPI has no token of its own to absorb that narrative.
2/ @RAILGUN_Project | $RAIL is the closest to the money path. If you want to fund the vault without a public address on the deposit, you shield through Railgun first. The 0.25% fee sits on that step, and the pool is already in the Kohaku SDK.

#EthereumFoundation has launched #zkAPI, enabling users to pay for #AI models and other metered APIs while keeping their identities private. The Foundation developed zkAPI with the Open Anonymity (OA) Project, an open-source AI privacy initiative, and has deployed it on #Ethereum mainnet. To use zkAPI, users must deposit ETH or USDC into an Ethereum vault, where their balance is recorded as a private note. zkAPI then uses zero-knowledge proofs to verify payments without revealing the underlying deposit.
A zkAPI server verifies the zero-knowledge proof and issues a temporary API key with a spending limit. Users send prompts directly to the AI provider, while usage is deducted from their private balance once the key expires. Each payment also generates a unique nullifier to prevent double-spending without revealing other information.
