Here are the 9 simple Zen Coding steps to master AI Assisted Coding (with useful prompt examples for Cursor, Windsurf at the end):
1. Mindful Preparation
- Spend 15 minutes learning best practices for your specific AI assistant.
- Understand your AI's strengths, limitations, and preferred input formats.
2. Structured Planning
- Take 5-15 minutes to sketch your app structure before any coding begins.
3. Clear Communication
- Use specific, detailed prompts rather than vague requests.
- Include context about your project's purpose and constraints.
4. Documentation First
- Have the AI create project_summary.md and technical_details.md documents at project start
- Update these documents after each significant development milestone.
5. Iterative Dialogue
- Ask clarifying questions when the AI's response isn't ideal.
- Guide the AI (e.g. "don't write code, this is just for brainstorming", "do not add unnecessary complexity").
6. Thoughtful Review
- Once a day, Ask the to review the code and identify the 3 most pressing problems.
- Request suggestions for architecture improvements before implementation.
7. Intentional Learning
- Ask for explanations of unfamiliar code patterns or techniques.
8. Holistic Testing
- Have the AI generate comprehensive test scenarios.
- Ask for edge cases you might not have considered.
9. Mindful Maintenance
- Ask AI to create update strategies for future code maintenance.
Useful Prompts for Zen Coding (Copy and Save these for later use):
To protect your code from lost connections during edits: "Can you implement your suggestions one by one? After each step, pause and acknowledge you completed that step and wait for my prompt to continue with the next steps (if any)"
For better AI assistant performance:
- "This refactoring should not change any functionality or UI of the application."
- "Start with one change at a time, validate it works, then move to the next."
- "Add proper TypeScript typing throughout to ensure type safety after each edit (for Typescript)."
- "Can you write a detailed prompt, tailored for an AI assistant, that includes what needs to be done for for this improvement."
For the AI Assistant to understand your project's context better (example for using MCP):
- "Hello AI, I have a Next.js/React/Tailwind CSS webapp project in my /XXX folder. Please review and analyze all of the codebase and then I2ll ask you for some improvements"
