It has been a fabulous 4 days spending time with about 60 other patients and patient advocates on Capitol Hill, thanks to @GlobalLiver Institute's #A3experience. Meeting with the offices of 4 members of congress and Senators was amazing, while we helped raise the voice of this silent epidemic, known as fatty liver disease (the team also raised a number of other liver related conditions that desperately need attention).

Including patients in the design of new NASH/MASH clinical research is becoming more of a “must do”. The first presentation today at #A3experience is really relevant to many of our FLA followers; “Fostering Collaboration: Embracing Teamwork in Research” with Gina Assaf, Co-Founder, Patient-Led Research Collaborative, Founder, Olive Branch International Digital Solutions (OBI Digital). Framework to Enable Collaboration between Patients/Researchers: RELEVANT Researchers, in partnership with patients, set research agendas based on emerging priorities that directly serve patients EFFECTIVE Research questions respond to patient community insights and ensure research is reflective of lived experiences, leading to faster and more accurate results DIFFERENT INCENTIVE STRUCTURES Patients are driven out of an incentive of desperation and improving their quality of life. Not trying to make a career, so can take more risks IMPACT-DRIVEN Research is widely disseminated in open-access academic journals, social media and within patient advocacy communities and created to have an impact. Examples of How Scorecards can be used: The Integration into Research Process scorecard can help the patient (group) be aware of their nature of involvement and enable parties to discuss and agree on acceptable and ideal levels of collaboration in the study. The patient (group) can use the Patient Burden and Patient/Partner Governance scorecard during or after the completion of the collaboration to help assess own involvement and suggest improvements going forward. If a research project is in its planning phase, all 4 scorecards can help guide grant-writing and establish mutual collaboration with patient groups. If study is already underway, the research group can use the Research Organization Readiness and Patient-Partner Governance scorecard to help assess the level of meaningful engagement and implement improvements for a more effective and sustainable collaboration with patients.
