5/10 EVs are present widely in biological fluids, of animals, plants and the microbiome and are involved in pathogen impact. Given their universal presence EVs are noted widely in ecosystems such as soil, water and atmosphere. #OuluTC, #eDNAforScience ja #aDNAforScience

4/10 EVs enclose molecules such as DNA, RNA, proteins, metabolites and glycans. Via their surface receptors EVs may be targeted to cells to regulate gene expression via their cargo release. Indeed, the EVs serve as new types eDNA of species. #eDNAforScience ja #aDNAforScience

3/10 Indeed, it has become evident during recent years that biological communication as a whole involves cell secreted extracellular vesicles (EVs). EVs are pico-, nano- and micro size lipid membrane captured complex molecular cargo units. #eDNAforScience ja #aDNAforScience

2/10 We are now learning that the classic vertical and horizontal “gene transfers “involve evolutionary old but rather recently identified cell secretory mechanism. This connects into the classic views of gene transfers in biology. #OuluTC, #eDNAforScience ja #aDNAforScience

1/10 Development and homeostasis control is thought to be regulated cell secreted signals that control morphogenesis and homeostasis maintenance. Such signals are universal and are connected to changes in body plan and homeostasis in evolution. #eDNAforScience ja #aDNAforScience

Thank you Anna-Kaisa Salmi and @DomActProject for your interesting insights combining aspects of both archaeology and environmental research! #aDNAforScience #eDNAforScience
Now, please welcome associate professor Anna-Kaisa Salmi from @DomActProject to present their research with the topic “Reindeer domestication, ancient DNA, and archaeological interpretation – Combining lines of evidence”. #aDNAforScience #eDNAforScience

Thank you @luomus for your important contribution to #eDNAforScience and #aDNAforScience! Museums are an invaluable part of the work that needs to be done.
4/10 @VTwort is using #aDNA methods to extract DNA from old Myotis #bat bone samples (~11,000 years old) to be included in a large #phylogenomic study trying to resolve their evolutionary history. For project updates follow: @battymusea @BatLabFinland #OuluTC #aDNAforScience 🦇

3/10 @VTwort is a postdoc at @BatLabFinland interested in #Museomics (using #Museum collections for #Genomics), #phylogenomics and #evolution. Currently working with Myotis #bats including untangling their evolutionary relationships. @battymusea #OuluTC #aDNAforScience 🦇

2/10 Today at Twitter conference organized by @OuluTC we will introduce four research projects from Luomus that are using #eDNA and #aDNA. Museums are also for preserving and understanding the molecular biodiversity of different taxa. #OuluTC #eDNAforScience #aDNAforScience

Next, please welcome researchers @VTwort, @FernandoRVLopes, @JohanssonNR and @JRikkinen from @luomus to talk about how museums can contribute to the field with their presentation “Museums for DNA”. #eDNAforScience #aDNAforScience

Thank you @KvistLaura and @WildlifeGenUoO for an interesting start for our Twitter conference on #eDNAforScience and #aDNAforScience!
3/10 Our oldest sample of farm animals is from a horse predating its domestication (over 6000 years old), but most samples come from #MedievalPeriod. In the picture you can see an #archaeological tooth with bite wear. #aDNAforScience

2/10 As #aDNA is low in quantity and quality, special environment and protocols are needed for extraction and preparation of subsequent analyses. Luckily, we have such a clean room inside the Centre for Material Analysis Research Infrastructure. #aDNAforScience

Please welcome docent @KvistLaura to start the conference with the topic “aDNA and eDNA of domesticated and wild animals”! She will tweet through her research group’s account @WildlifeGenUoO. #eDNAforScience #aDNAforScience

5/5 Before starting we’d like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all of our speakers, collaborators and the wonderful organizing team of @MiraKoski, @joukoin and @HeidiPeuraniemi. #eDNAforScience #aDNAforScience
1/5 We are about to start @UniOulu ‘s Twitter conference “Emerging methods for environmental and archaeological studies: eDNA and aDNA”. Welcome to participate in this conference from anywhere in the world! 😊 #eDNAforScience #aDNAforScience #ForNature
