Aug. 15 marked the fifth anniversary of the fall of Kabul to the Taliban, but the armed resistance to Taliban rule has not disappeared.
Former members of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (#ANDSF) continue efforts to oust the Taliban, with three main groups now waging a low-level insurgency despite scant international support.
The newest group to enter the fight is the Afghanistan United Front (#AUF), led by former Afghan National Special Operations Corps commander Lt. Gen. Sami Sadat. After operating as a political organization, the AUF announced Aug. 2 that it had begun military operations and claimed responsibility for attacks against the Taliban across Afghanistan, adding a Pashtun-led force to a resistance previously dominated by Tajik leaders.
"These are the faces of former Afghan National Defense and Security Forces personnel who were killed after the Taliban seized control," Sadat said in a July 20 post on X that included images of former Afghan government soldiers who had allegedly been tortured or killed by the Taliban.
"In the past three months alone, we have documented more than 184 former soldiers killed, many subjected to horrific torture. ... We refuse to forget them. To those who still sympathize with the Taliban, look at these faces and ask yourself: what if this were your father, your mother, your brother, your sister, your son, or your daughter? These are not statistics. They were Afghans."
Sadat continued: "They were our soldiers. They are our brothers and sisters. We will remember them, we will honor them, and we will never stop pursuing justice."
Sadat said he hopes to keep the Taliban under pressure. His group opened hostilities with an attack in Kandahar, one of the Taliban's principal strongholds.
"Choosing Kandahar was deliberate," Sadat told the Long War Journal. "We want to show them that there is nowhere safe from our attacks, even in the Taliban's supreme leader's house."
Until then, the AUF had operated as a political organization that sought to keep opposition to Taliban rule alive. The group held a forum on Aug. 15 aimed at raising awareness of conditions in Afghanistan.
Sadat had spoken for years about returning to Afghanistan to resume the fight. Until now, the most prominent leaders of the anti-Taliban resistance have been Tajiks. The AUF's entry adds a Pashtun-led force to the armed opposition. Pashtuns constitute the Taliban's principal ethnic base.
The AUF joins the Afghanistan Freedom Front (AFF), headed by former Afghan National Army Chief of Staff Gen. Yasin Zia, and the National Resistance Front of Afghanistan (NRF), led by Ahmad Massoud, son of famed Afghan mujahideen commander Ahmad Shah Massoud. Both groups include remnants of Afghanistan's pre-Taliban security forces.
Together, the groups have maintained a low-level resistance to Taliban rule since 2021.
They hope divisions between Taliban factions in Kabul and Kandahar, along with public fatigue with the Taliban's extremism, could encourage defections and eventually weaken the regime.
Sadat has spent several years preparing to resume the fight while building a political coalition on both sides of the Atlantic. The AUF has carried out operations independently of the AFF and NRF, although the three groups maintain friendly relations at the leadership level.
The resistance, however, faces significant obstacles to breaking the Taliban's hold over Afghanistan. Meanwhile, protests in northeastern Badakhshan province have highlighted tensions between Taliban authorities and some of the communities they govern.
The AUF claimed responsibility for 18 operations across Afghanistan during the first two weeks of its campaign. In a statement posted on X, the group said it would continue fighting until Afghanistan was freed from Taliban rule.
"Historically, Afghans first fight and then come to politics, and this has been the reason why we could not build a reliable political system," Sadat told the Foundation for Defense of Democracies' Long War Journal when asked why the group chose to launch military operations now.
"We have learned from our past mistakes and this time, we spent the time to assess the failures and successes, developed a workable strategy, assembled a team of committed Afghan generals, built an international network, and then launched operations."
AUF spokesman Gen. Hillel Kakar, writing on X, accused the Taliban of "treason" and said the penalty for treason is death.
Retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Will Selber, an Afghanistan veteran and former intelligence officer, told Newsmax that Sadat brings significant credentials to the fight as a well-known Afghan military leader and a Pashtun from Helmand province.
Selber, however, sees a difficult road ahead for Sadat and the other anti-Taliban groups because they lack the kind of external sanctuary the Taliban enjoyed in Pakistan under the watch of the country's Inter-Services Intelligence agency.
Selber said the Taliban remain firmly in control of Afghanistan and that the resistance's lack of significant external financial and military support leaves the groups facing an uphill battle.
"It took the Taliban five years to really start increasing attacks against the United States," Selber said. "They have neither of those things. I think the question remains, what is success? What is it like in a couple of years?"
The question, Selber said, is whether success would mean capturing a small part of Afghanistan to establish a safe haven or seizing several provincial centers. For now, he said, the odds of overthrowing the Taliban remain long.

The Pakistani government has told the media that it is not involved in hosting Afghan opponents of the Taliban. Unfortunately, this is untrue. The Pakistani Intelligence Agency ISI is the actual organizer of the conference and is orchestrating the visit. For example, ISI sent the list of Afghan participants to Pakistan's Foreign Ministry for visa and related services. The Pakistani Foreign Ministry appears to have resented ISI's venture and thus leaked the list. Afghans have the right to oppose the Taliban government. But given the history of Afghan/Pakistan relations, I believe Pakistan is repeating its past mistakes, pitting one group of Afghans against another - which, unfortunately, is not hard to do. This conference is likely to be reciprocated by Kabul, further damaging relations. Afghanistan and Pakistan need good relations.
