Designed by Brunelleschi 1428-1435, with building beginning 1444, today’s #AChurchADay was the awesome Santo Spirito, in Oltrarno. Like San Lorenzo, it is an incredibly harmonious and serene space.
It was a glorious afternoon for today’s #AChurchADay involving a trek up to San Miniato al Monte: worth every thigh-aching step – and not just for the views! Built 1018-1063, it was one of the most important churches in 11th C. Florence.
Today’s #AChurchADay is the famously ‘unfinished’ San Lorenzo. While many of Florence’s churches have a distinctive white, green & pink marble façade, San Lorenzo’s exterior décor planned by Michelangelo was abandoned for becoming too costly!
But for me, these were bonus treats, on a pilgrimage to the Cappella Rucellai! Built by Alberti in 1467, this small, barrel-vaulted chapel contains a sepulchre constructed in the proportions (it’s smaller!) of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. #AChurchADay
I had a few days away from #AChurchADay to take in the Galleria del’Accademia and the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Firenze. Of course, seeing Michelangelo’s David ‘in the flesh’ was a highlight! (Those are definitely some boy feet, if ever I saw them!)
Today's Florentine #AChurchADay is a pilgrimage I’ve been looking forward to: the burial place of Fillipino Lippi, San Michele Visdomini. But it was a little underwhelming, & I did sprint out when I thought I was being locked in by a strange man who had been lurking around…
Day 9 of my Florentine #AChurchADay adventures is a big one! I had an amazing few hours exploring the Basilica della Santissima Annunziata (Most Holy Annunciation). 🧵
I was very kindly welcomed by the Ukrainian Uniate community at the Church of St Simone e Guida this morning. Only open on Sundays, the church was founded in 1192-93, but most of what we see dates from an extensive mid-17th-C., post-flood-damage, renovation. #AChurchADay
I loved the slightly stark interior of Sta Maria Maggiore, but the biggest curiosity here is the Voldemort-esque Roman statue fragment of a ladies head embedded in the masonry, high on the outside of the north wall. Apparently, locals affectionately call her ‘Berta’! #AChurchADay
Probably his best-known work, this innovative depiction of the Adoration of the Angels by Francesco Boschi, includes the Virgin and Child in a separate frame within the painting, to stand out as a highlight of the works in the church. #AChurchADay
Of course, I don’t have favourites, but if I did … the Church of SS Apostoli & St Blaze is the oldest parish church in Florence dating to the 11th C (w/ later re-modelling) but some sources (legends) give it as founded by Charlemagne, and consecrated in 805. #AChurchADay
With the original form of the building dating to the 11th C – floor mosaics of which are housed at the Bargello (another day!) – today’s treat is the Basilica Sta Trìnita. Bursting with amazing art, the fun begins in the crypt where the column capitals are original. #AChurchADay
I was lucky this morning to catch All Saints’ Day Mass at the Church of San Salvatore in ‘Ognissanti’, Florence! Of course, I stayed behind to do some art history-ing! #AChurchADay 🧵
Day 18 #Achurchaday #Alleluia #HeHasRisen and today I’m at the wonderful #ArtDeco #ChurchBuilding in @DioSalisbury But which church ? Built in the 1930’s for a burgeoning new housing estate.
Day 17 #achurchaday. There is some fascinating #graffiti in our #churchbuildings. This fine example is at #Bedale #StGregory @LeedsCofE. But sadly the churchwarden couldn’t shed any light on it - anyone out there help ?

Day 3 #achurchaday This guy really should #StayHome, there really isn’t a place for a pneumatic drill in a #historic #churchbuilding but where is he ? Maybe be found his way in using the abandoned ladder ? Keep your church buildings secure and lock ladders up @Ecclesiastical
