Captain William David Patton was born in #Aghadowey, near #Coleraine, in County #Londonderry, #NorthernIreland on 12th September 1967 ✋🏼☘️🦅🇬🇧
#Captain #DavidPatton was reportedly due to come home from #Afghanistan 🇦🇫 — instead, he stayed another week to help his team, and never returned.
By June 2006, Patton had already given roughly two decades of his life to the #BritishArmy. 🇬🇧🦅
He began in the ranks of the #RoyalIrishRangers ☘️, continued with the #RoyalIrishRegiment, and rose all the way to #WarrantOfficer #Class1 — the highest warrant officer rank in the British Army.
In Northern Ireland, his service as a #ColourSergeant earned him the Queen’s Commendation for Valuable Service.
But his career did not stop there.
Patton later served with the newly formed #SRR #SpecialReconnaissanceRegiment, part of #UK #SpecialForces, and in 2006 was commissioned as a Captain.
Then came Afghanistan.
He was reportedly due to return home, but volunteered to remain for one more week to support his team.
On 27th June 2006, during a planned British operation in the #Sangin Valley, his patrol came under attack from #Taliban fighters.
Captain Patton and Sergeant #PaulBartlett of the #RoyalMarines ⚓️ were killed. Another British serviceman was seriously wounded.
Captain Patton was only 38.
Behind the uniform was a #husband and a #father of three. His youngest child was only about 14 months old.
His death came after years spent rising through the ranks, taking on greater responsibility and continuing to serve #ActiveService on demanding operations.
And it came during the extra week he had reportedly volunteered to serve.
David Patton’s story is remembered not simply because of the rank he reached or the #unit he served with, but because of the long life of service that brought him to that final operation.
