What happens after an #AIforGood startup wins a global innovation competition? For MamaMate, winning the 2025 AI for Good Innovation Factory helped turn an emerging maternal-health technology into a growing health infrastructure solution serving communities in South Africa and Tanzania.
Developed by Ele-Vate AI Africa, MamaMate uses offline, solar-powered technology to deliver maternal-health guidance in local languages, including in communities where internet access, electricity and healthcare resources remain limited.
Its progress offers several lessons for the wider AI-for-good ecosystem:
• Design for real-world constraints. AI solutions can reach underserved populations only when they account for connectivity, language, literacy and infrastructure barriers.
• Recognition can unlock implementation. MamaMate reports that its AI for Good awards increased credibility, opened conversations with governments and health organizations, and supported production of 600 additional units.
• Early outcomes matter. The platform reports supporting 1,073 mothers, increasing antenatal-care adherence by 70%, improving early identification of high-risk pregnancies by 80% and reducing referral times by 95%.
• Scale requires institutional integration. Planned clinical trials with Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences could help build evidence for adoption within Tanzania’s public healthcare system.
MamaMate’s story shows that AI’s greatest value lies in whether technology can reach people, earn trust and strengthen the systems on which lives depend.
