The Relationship between Lincoln and Russia: During the Civil War, Russia was one of the few European states that actively supported the Union (the North). This support was partly due to the political relations between Abraham Lincoln and Tsar Alexander II.
The Blockade: Lincoln imposed a naval blockade of Southern ports as part of his war strategy, known as the "Anaconda Plan." The aim was to cut off the South's supply lines and weaken its ability to continue the war.
The Russian Naval Squadron: In 1863, Russia sent two naval squadrons, one to the east coast and one to the west coast of the USA.
