Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan: Maybe the new leadership in Iran could adopt a more flexible stance at this point. I frankly believe the new leadership could be an opportunity to stop the war. At the moment, Iran is being governed by a temporary three-member council until a new leader is selected. This could create a window of opportunity. If handled wisely, a balance must be struck—one in which Iranians do not feel deeply humiliated, while at the same time the concerns of others are addressed. Otherwise, the war itself could take on a much more dangerous trajectory.

Exactly 10 years ago Turkey shot down a Russian Su-24 after it violated Turkish airspace near the Syrian border. This incident became one of the most serious confrontations between Russia and a NATO member in decades. It’s a stark reminder that Moscow’s reckless behavior didn’t begin in 2022. I just really wish that European countries had shown and would still show today the same decisiveness that Turkey demonstrated back then.
