Conflicts between #FAO & #CITES advice remain. Arguments ❌ listing focus on limited data in international trade, BUT this should not influence and #AppendixII listing Proposal was accepted ✅ with 87% majority 🐟

New study @nature commercial tuna and swordfish managed as catch but sharks disregarded and declining as bycatch. Sharks are wildlife. Lets protect them @CITES now under Prop. 37,38,39,40 and #savesharks https://t.co/uzrR17ibn0 #AppendixII #bluesharks #iucn

Success for #sharks and rays! Last week, @CITES voted to include 18 new species in #AppendixII—including the shortfin mako shark, considered the world’s fastest—thereby regulating their #InternationalTrade. 📷 by Mark Conlin, SWFSC Large Pelagics Program.

SAVE ENDANGERED SPECIES FROM #EXTINCTION There‘s NO excuse for perpetual reaping of sacred #life for greed’s sake. Go to #Mars for “resources” or reap them elsewhere by pursuing @StarTrek technology innovation — the #earth has had enough! #Evolve now #AppendixII #TheLastElephants

In 2016 we attended CITESCoP17 with #VR headsets in hand. By taking government representatives on a ‘dry dive’ with #mobularays, we successfully lobbied them to vote in favour of listing mobula rays on #AppendixII. Now it's the turn of guitarfish and mako sharks at #CITESCoP18

When identifying shark fins there are key "landmarks" to use. @KatGledhill shows regional government officials how to use these key characteristics to make trade monitoring effective and straightforward #CITES4Sharks #AppendixII #sciencesavessharks

Sri Lanka is a proponent of the @cites4sharks #AppendixII listing of #wedgefish. Wedgefish populations are critically endangered and vulnerable throughout their range but managed trade can help them recover. NB: their fins are of high value & fetch up to USD964/Kg in China & HK

#Sharks play important ecological roles, but their economic value is often overlooked. By sustainably managing their #fisheries we continue to support #coastaleconomies and #livelihoods. Of fishers and ecotourism industries #CITES4Sharks #cop18sharks #AppendixII
