The Multi-Purpose Icebreaker (MPI) design was developed from the keel up for North American coast guard operations. It exceeds all Arctic Security Cutter requirements specified in the recent RFI and supports all eleven @USCG statutory missions.

Is the Canada planning to build eight new #icebreakers — two heavy and six medium ones — or 24 if you count in the #ARC146 MPVs that are rated as #PolarClass4 icebreakers (same as the Finnish #ARC130 Polaris).
Intended to replace up to three classes of older ships with one platform, the sixteen(!!) #PolarClass 4 MPVs built by Seaspan Vancouver Shipyards will form the future backbone of Canadian Coast Guard's #icebreaking and fairway management fleet on Canada's three coasts.
