L is for "long and short work” – the Anglo-Saxon practice of laying horizontal slabs alternately with tall vertical ones to form quoins (a term which refers to both the corner and the cornerstones).

The misericords in the chancel of the Church of St Agnes, Cawston, #Norfolk, have some particularly fantastical designs. These are only some of the unique and remarkable features to be found in this Grade I listed Church. #ArchAlpha
L is for lancet window - a tall, narrow window, with a pointed arch at the head. Lancets are characteristic of early Gothic architecture. #ArchAlpha
At Little Wenham Castle #Suffolk, lancets are combined with trefoils and quatrefoils to decorative effect.

Throughout the medieval period, Christian crosses at market places gave way to roofed structures, such as this 15th century example at #Mildenhall.
Market crosses were usually owned and maintained by the market authority.
