Next up is the AGM-183A Advanced Rapid Response Weapon or #ARRW.ARRW traces its origin back to DARPA’s highly ambitious Tactical Boost Glide (TBG) program which aimed to design, develop and flight test a tactical #Hypersonic glide vehicle with high lift to drag. While TBG matured the advanced glide vehicle, and achieved test success, the ARRW program was launched around 2020 to build a weapon system leveraging technology matured via TBG. Though the ARRW flight test program saw setbacks and some test failures, it was widely regarded in the community as a successful effort given the ambitious nature of the Mid-Tier Acquisition program. Reversing course from Biden administration’s plans, the Trump administration has decided to begin production of the AGM-183 #ARRW making it the first hypersonic weapon to be fielded by the US Air Force. While exact performance is classified, ARRW has been described by USAF officials as having a 1,000 mile range. ARRW will be the primary Hypersonic strike weapon for the B-52 bomber. Each B-52 would be able to carry 4 AGM-183As. 5/7
As noted and reported previously, the administration has also requested procurement funding for the AGM-183A #ARRW #Hypersonic missile system. The budget request includes $387 Million funding to begin buying the ARRW missile system.
Unlike the #Scramjet powered #Hypersonic Attack Cruise Missile #HACM, the AGM-183A #ARRW Mid-Tier Acquisition effort has concluded its testing phase and is ready to produce and deliver operational prototypes while advancing the program to a larger EMD effort for follow on development. #HACM is about 3 years away from that stage.
Despite attempts by Frank Kendall / Andrew Hunter to cancel and/or postpone #ARRW, the restoration of production funding puts the service on the path it itself charted back in the 2013/14 when it partnered with DARPA to pursue both high L/D hypersonic glide vehicle demonstrator (Tactical Boost Glide) and a next generation #Scramjet cruiser (HAWC). This is welcomed news for long term planning particularly around hypersonics where service commitment beyond S&T has previously been shaky. (📹AFRL Maj Gen Thomas Masiello 2014).
Another reason why the AGM-183A is critical is the capability it provides for the B-52 and legacy bombers. Long range/stand off weapon are going to be essential to ensure the B-52 remains a viable platform for the decades of service life ahead of it. #ARRW has been described as a 1000 mile / 1600 km weapon with significantly ⬆️top speed relative to the Mach 5+ #HACM which also only offers about half its range.
Restoring AGM-183A production funding is an extremely wise decision from the administration. The Tactical Boost Glide (TBG) based #ARRW offers significantly greater range & speed over the scramjet powered #HACM making it a complementary capability. DARPA/AFRL pursued both HAWC and TBG for this same reason. It also maintains 2 teams in air-launched #hypersonic production programs. Lastly, ARRW significantly pushes the US SOTA in terms of boost glide vehicles. Production decision means the more capable glider will have a production base and be a candidate for future technology insertions.
