Signing off now, for the last time from the current AAO. We'll be back at our regularly scheduled time in due course, perhaps with a short break while we find our feet in our new homes. Stay tuned for the next exciting episode in the life of the AAO! #askAAO

It's been a roller coaster ride for everyone at @AAOastro for the past year. We are sad to see the end of the amazing organisation that has led optical astronomy in Australia for almost half a century, but also excited by the new future ahead. #askAAO

So, with a huge effort, and a big shout out to @magneticlemur who will be the interim Director for the new AAO-MQ, and to @MatthewColless for shepherding through the new AAT Consortium and Council, we are now poised for our new futures, starting on Sunday! #askAAO

The expression of interest process resulted in a consortium led by @Macquarie_Uni, together with @scienceANU and @Sydney_Science, being awarded the opportunity to take on the AAO's instrumentation capability, announced in Dec. 2017. Six months and counting... #askAAO

Hi @terry_tjb. Sure! Like I said, @tamarastro and @cosmicpinot are the experts, and they work with Chris Lidman, the new Director of @SidingSpring, who is leading the OzDES survey at the AAT for the latest discoveries. I'll leave it to them to give you the details! #askAAO https://t.co/w1o0dzYube
@AAOastro @tamarastro @cosmicpinot Well, I know about the different options. But I would like to hear about the latest results from present dark energy surveys, and new surveys being planned. And good luck Andrew with the transition-- you folks have been through a lot of changes in the past few years.
But the AAO is also a world leading instrumentation powerhouse, building unique technology for telescopes worldwide. What was to become of that part of the organisation? #askAAO

To help things along, the @VC_ANU had agreed that the ANU would take on operations of the Anglo-Australian Telescope. Universities nationwide were rallied to contribute to the operating costs, forming a new AAT Council, coordinated by @AstroAustralia. #askAAO

To support the cost of the @ESO strategic partnership, enabling @ESO_Australia, the AAO would need to be moved out of the Department of @IndustryGovAu, and into the research sector. And there was just one year to do it. #askAAO

That last tweet probably needs some explanation for those who aren't #askAAO regulars. It all starts a little over a year ago.... (get settled in, now, cue wibbly-wobbly flashback wavy transition).

Welcome to the final #askAAO in the AAO's current incarnation. I'm @evil_dr_hopkins, Head of Research and Outreach at the AAO, and I'll be here for the next hour to take your astro questions.

Join me in just over half an hour as I take over the @AAOastro account for the final episode of #askAAO! From next week, @AAOastro will be part of @MQSciEng. We expect #askAAO to continue, with a new @Macquarie_Uni flavour!
Today's #askAAO is with instrument scientist Anthony Horton, bringing news from the #SPIEastro conference, @AstroHuntsman commissioning & more. Join us in half an hour! ^AJH

That's all we have time for on this week's #askAAO, but do keep posting questions any time and we'll do our best to answer them. Until the next time, clear skies! ^SDR

Want to know what flying on @SOFIAtelescope is like? Come to my talk next week. https://t.co/9F6ztGXOPU #askAAO ^SDR

Nice to see @SOFIAtelescope back under southern skies again, flying out of @CHC_Airport. I still remember my flights 2 years ago fondly. #askAAO ^SDR

We used to think planets around binary stars would not have stable orbits, but now we're not so sure... https://t.co/qOkNfav1GX #askAAO ^SDR

Astronomers now realise they can't ignore the effect of binary companions when it comes to predicting how any one star will evolve; after all, most stars are in binary (or multiple) star systems like Tatooine. #askAAO ^SDR

@PeteLawler Good question! Some astronomers now think Planet X (or Planet 9 depending on whether you think Pluto still ought to be a planet) may not be needed after all https://t.co/DuT5OMg6sh #askAAO ^SDR

We used to think supernovae came in just 2 types (I & II), but now we have Ia, Iax, Ibn, IIP, IIL, IIn, IIb, Ic-BL,... Talk about confusing! #askAAO ^SDR
