CISS in Vienna | Ambassador @NaqviAliSarwar, the Executive Director of @CISS_Islamabad, participated in a special session on "Nuclear power to support a just transition in the Global South" at the @iaeaorg #ATOM4NETZERO Conference. He highlighted that #Pakistan's journey to nuclear power generation is nothing short of remarkable. From early support for #peacefulnuclear program to overcoming challenges in reactor development, it's a testament to our dedication. We're now proud operators of the fifth power plant, generating 300-500 megawatts. He added that as we venture into the fourth phase, two large power plants with a capacity of 1,100 megawatts each are on the horizon. He stressed that #Pakistan's commitment to cleaner energy solutions and addressing its power needs is unwavering. The road may be challenging, but the progress is undeniable. Ambassador Naqvi highlighted that #Carbon emissions are a global concern, but nuclear power stands as a substantial positive. Once established, it doesn't contribute to Earth's carbon burden and offers efficient energy production. In her presentation she highlighted that energy deficient and economically strained countries like #Pakistan, nuclear power is sustainable, clean, and a green source of energy in the overall energy mix. There is a general non-controversial consensus in Pakistan regarding addressing energy demands through an increase of the share of nuclear technology in the energy mix. In this regard, these evolutionary, innovative and cost-effective nuclear power systems can possibly present solutions to address Pakistan’s energy demands while helping combat #climatechange. In the regions like #Balochistan and Thar where there are scarce water resources, or areas which face water stress like the coastal region of Sindh, #SMRs could be deployed to address #Pakistan’s energy demands.
