📍 The Fra Mauro Map (1450)The most famous visual proof. Barara is depicted as a major metropolitan hub in Shawa. 📖 Ref: Falchetta, P., "Fra Mauro's World Map," p. 192-194.
📍 The Walker Hypothesis identifies Barara near the Entoto mountain range, suggesting a high-altitude strategic capital. 📖 Ref: Walker, C., "The Medieval Capitals of Ethiopia," p. 45-48.
📍 The Viganò Hypothesis argues for a location further south, near the Akaki River and Mount Yerer foothills. 📖 Ref: Viganò, A., "Barara: The Lost Metropolis of Ethiopia," p. 12-17.

Cartographic Testimony and Archaeological Rediscovery
The primary bridge between myth and geography is the Fra Mauro map of 1450. Produced in Venice, it relied on testimonies from Ethiopian monks who provided a relative geometry of the highlands using landmarks like Mount Yerer, Mount Zuqualla, and the Wechecha range.
There are currently two primary competing theories regarding Barara's location:
The Entoto Hypothesis: Supported by Marco Vigano and Habtamu Tegegne (Rutgers), this theory identifies the "Pentagon" site on the Entoto hills as the core of the medieval city .
The Southeastern Hypothesis: Proposed by Samuel Walker, this identifies a site of over two square kilometers northwest of the confluence of the Dukem and Mojo rivers. Walker’s site includes tower foundations, a massive water system, and material culture (pottery, glass) suggesting global trade links.
The emergence of Barara as a regional power center is rooted in the political consolidation of the Solomonic dynasty. Following the fall of the Zagwe dynasty in 1270, the empire's center of gravity shifted southward into the strategic Shawan plateau. Contrary to the long-standing "roving capital" thesis, evidence for Barara suggests a sophisticated, permanent urban infrastructure that functioned as the principal residence of the Emperor and the seat of the Patriarch . Research from institutions such as Rutgers University and Addis Ababa University indicates that under the reign of King Dawit I (r. 1380–1412), Barara solidified its status as a cosmopolitan hub.
The involvement of researchers in the 2014 "Exploring Ancient China's Links to Africa" meetup highlighted the presence of Chinese ceramics in the Shawan highlands, suggesting that Barara was integrated into the "Silk Road of the Sea" long before Portuguese Jesuits arrived. This multidisciplinary effort—from heritage labs in Oxford to remote sensing centers in Addis Ababa—is essential to finally unlocking the full narrative of this long-lost African capital.
The destruction of Barara in 1531 by Imam Ahmad bin Ibrahim al-Ghazi (Ahmad Gragn) marked the end of its era. Archaeological findings show a "destruction layer" where even domestic tools like grindstones were shattered to ensure the population's displacement was permanent. The modern founding of Addis Ababa in 1886 is often interpreted by scholars like Habtamu Tegegne as a "rebirth" of this ancestral Solomonic capital .
