If you're a Dylan fan and a follower of mine who somehow missed these threads, a good way in would be to search #BD969 + (title of album/song you want to know my thoughts about)!
Postscript for non-beginners: you may enjoy my #BD969 project from a few years back, where I tweeted my way through every Bob Dylan recording in chronological order https://t.co/h2nBpPocDh
It does seem unfair to start #BD969 with a bunch of songs (from the soundtrack of the Scorsese doc No Direction Home) that would be of no interest to anyone if the person recording them hadn't gone on to become Bob Dylan. But there is something cool going on here.
Meanwhile this new Infidels outtake is also drenched in allusions to the crucifixion but now Bob worries it's too late for Him to return, given how corrupted the world (and the church) have become #BD969 https://t.co/2adU4hMcMC
Sorry, I forgot that we held a #BD969 contest and Blind Willie McTell is officially THE finest song Dylan ever left off an album (though my vote went to Up To Me) https://t.co/LQn48GG76j
The #BD969 Outtakes Tournament all comes down to this. Two perfect Bob Dylan songs, each unfathomably left of the album it was recorded for. Only one can be champion. The winner will receive a place of honor in a future tournament, so choose wisely!
Woke up to a new version of Blind Willie McTell, one of the finest songs Dylan ever left off an album. The previous release is built around piano & acoustic guitar. This one, a passionate take with electric guitar & harmonica, may be just as great #BD969 https://t.co/uWFxbAYqy0
I didn't live tweet Shadow Kingdom because I wanted to, uh, live listen, but sure I've got some random post-show thoughts to add to the ol' #BD969 thread
For an upcoming project I was going through my old #BD969 thread about listening to every Dylan song in order and I noticed how many times I mentioned a track I liked that I wasn't very familiar with, so I made a playlist out of them https://t.co/PTMygfwesR
Here's my #BD969 thread on why I think these three albums, while far from Dylan's best, may be his most underrated
https://t.co/2iwSqbuR20
Remember kids, I wrote a pretty cool book about Christian pop culture so I have Thoughts about Contemporary Christian Music (CCM). This excerpt is important context for what Bob's about to do as #BD969 hits 1979: https://t.co/Mrkp9Hg2fT
@SerapChris @isitrollingpod @PaulNoth I wish I'd had it when I did #BD969. I missed so many little oddities that are on here!
@LukeVBurns #BD969 was my insane project to listen to every Dylan song in chronological order https://t.co/xZNroVcQMt
I'll wrap up this #BD969 appendix with the album's most anomalous track, a tender and (relatively) simple love song. This is the one I predict will spawn some truly beautiful covers, as Make You Feel My Love did 20 years ago. https://t.co/ofQK3qQnb4
And reading the lyrics to Key West I see another Great American Songbook reference -- a clever allusion to I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter #BD969
Speaking of Murder Most Foul, I think releasing that song first was a bit of a red herring. As Dylan's longest song ever it seems like it should be the album's most Important Statement, but I'd give that to Key West, which is less ostentatious than MMF but feels deeper #BD969
R&RW might be Dylan's most violent album, full of blood feuds & vengeance. Pistols, swords, butcher's hooks and crooked knives stuck into ribs. Arms hacked off, gunpowder from ice and chilling threats. "One of these days I’ll forget to be kind." Murder most foul, indeed! #BD969
Side note, from reading the official lyrics page. Is this the first time Bob has written G-d, Orthodox Jewish style? And if so, what's he trying to tell us? #BD969
Earlier in #BD969 I said I'd like to hear Dylan sing more originals in the vocal style he adopts for his Sinatra albums and we get that here (alternating tracks with a blues growl). It's also clear from the lyrics that the American Songbook is still very much in his head
Nowhere does he do this more cleverly than in My Own Version of You, a perfect analogy for what Dylan does on R&RW: he digs up pieces of old songs, poems and books and frankensteins them into something purely his own. Something monstrous, beautiful and above all... ALIVE! #BD969
ok #BD969'ers let's talk Rough & Rowdy Ways, a brilliant album whose central theme is Bob's artistic process -- the types of songs he sings (of experience! of love! of betrayal! landscapes! nudes!), where they come from, and even what he hopes to accomplish with them
My #BD969 appendix on Rough & Rowdy Ways will roll out slow bc I want to process before I say much. For now my only Q is did Bob produce it himself? There's no one credited but it's crisp & clear in a way that suits him & the music perfectly--and that some previous albums weren't
