So like one of the weirder things of #beingdeaf is when you use q-tips, you don’t hear them. They sound broke.

I realized recently I don’t listen to music as much as I used to. I used to be a dance teacher. I still love dance and music. But when I listen to it now - it’s missing sounds. I can feel it if I put my hands on the speakers, but nothing I do makes me hear it. #beingdeaf
Trying to wrap my head around the fact that I can’t hear some sounds at all. I mean, not hearing well I could ‘access’ mentally. But the reality of not hearing some sounds - and never hearing them again - is hard to navigate mentally for me. #beingdeaf
I did have a moment of existential panic (but I didn’t cry, so I’ll take it as a win) when I realized this is _all the time_ and I just noticed what I wasn’t hearing tonight with the music because the bass is loud enough to be felt in vibrations. #BeingDeaf
#BeingDeaf means I don’t hear the bass in music now. #HearingAids are great but not enough when you are completely #deaf in lower frequencies. I “hear” the music by sitting or standing on something to feel the vibrations. I “listen” to the kick drum in my chest. #DeafAwareness

Imagine wearing glasses smeared w/ Vaseline. You could see...but not clearly. You’d feel very hesitant in a crowd. You’d struggle. You’d function, but expend so much energy trying to see - it would be exhausting.
This is how I hear in crowded or loud environments.

@mckellogs Also annoying (but representing the #beingdeaf side here): Turning away while speaking to me. Or speaking behind me. I mean...by all means, proceed. But don’t expect me to answer.
#beingdeaf means, “Yes, I have on my hearing aids but, no, I can’t always understand what you are saying.” My word recognition is about 80% even with hearing aids. Without, it’s about 60%. If you aren��t directly facing me: I know you’re speaking, but I can’t understand you.
#beingdeaf: Going to the airport now means I have to tell the agents at the desk that I’m deaf so they can alert me to flight changes. Also: I can no longer sit in the exit row. (I have almost missed two flights now that had gate changes I did not hear over the intercom.)
