The Italian #mafia assassinated Maltese journalist #Daphne_Caruana in 2017 becoz she exposed Libyan fuel smuggling networks in Malta, Zuwara&Italy, then killed Al-#Bidja because he had evidence vs mafia members, while releasing #Osama_Injiem cuze they still needed his services.

@tomkington interviewed me for
@thetimes on #Libya and the impact of #Bidja's murder on Libyan migration policy.

🇱🇾 #Libya - Political analyst Kamel Al-Marash: "Assassination of #Bidja has little to do with political dimensions but rather with settling of scores between militia leaders and the conflict over illegal immigration trade, and huge profits made from this trade". #migrantcrisis

This is a useful take on #Bidja by L’Orient Le Jour, which explains why it’s misleading to describe the now-slain Zawiyah native as “a notorious human smuggler.”
The Europeans were extremely pleased in 2017 when they found they could work closely with characters like Bidja.
Ever since, under the impulse of Bidja and others, the Libyan coast guard has primarily focused on #intercepting migrants — often using violence. Only a small portion of the Libyan coast guard’s time is devoted to aiding smuggling activities toward the EU’s shores. The resulting balance is rhetorically criticized by the Europeans but in reality it is largely satisfactory to Italy & others.
Includes some of my thoughts.

A summary of what’s happened lately in Zawiyah, west Libya, following the Sept. 1st assassination of al-#Bidja, a prominent Awlad Buhmira tribe member, in nearby Janzur.
Al-Bidja’s local popularity, strong tribal connections, and involvement in assisting the EU with its anti-migrant policies made his assassination a significant event. His killing was bound to provoke a forceful response from his tribe, which dominates the eastern flank of Zawiyah.
As we all recall, back in May-Jun. 2023, the greater Zawiyah area witnessed a series of drone strikes ordered by Prime Minister Dabaiba against the Awlad Buhmira’s illicit networks. At that juncture, we saw Attorney General Sadiq al-Sur mediate these conflicts, demonstrating a willingness to recognize different factions’ legitimacy, including the Zawiyah component of the Stabilization Support Apparatus led by Hassan Buzeriba, an Awlad Buhmira commander known for his connection to the Haftar family and the Benghazi-based government of Usama Hammad.
Yesterday, Tuesday, investigations conducted by the same Hassan Buzeriba, on behalf of the Attorney General, led to identifying three Zawiyah men aligned with Mohammed Bahrun (known as al-Far) as suspects in al-Bidja’s assassination. This determination put Bahrun under pressure, both in terms of his public image and the threat of physical assault from various factions, including not just Hassan Buzeriba but also Uthman al-Laheb, an Awlad Saqr commander based in the western flank of Zawiyah.
Absent a voluntary handover, Mahmud Ben Rajab, a GNU MoD commander known for always following Turkey’s desiderata, would probably have participated in a military offensive meant to extract the three suspects on Bahrun’s side by force.
Faced with such tremendous pressure, Bahrun ultimately chose to hand over the suspects. However, despite Bahrun’s huge concession, a Salafi leader named Hatem al-Ghayeb (close to the Buzeribas) released a video linking Bahrun to a previous violent incident, which killed innocent girls in Zawiyah, further damaging Bahrun’s reputation and making his movements in the coastal city of 200,000 more difficult.
While open warfare was avoided during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, nothing was truly resolved. But at least things are calm this morning. Lastly, note that there was also a clear effort in all public discourse to avoid any mention of the GNU leadership in Tripoli. All the public attention was concentrated on Bahrun, who is now in the capital.

In the years following 2020, #Bidja had become a valuable asset for Turkey. He helped with #security for Turkey’s naval base in Janzur, which houses hundreds of Syrian mercenaries.
Previously, during 2017-2018, Bidja had been more closely aligned with the Italian state. However, by 2019, the Italians began distancing themselves from this relationship, finding it increasingly embarrassing vis-à-vis public opinion. This unease persisted, as Bidja ultimately became a figure with extensive knowledge of the unsavory side of the #migrant flow & coordination between the EU and western Libya in the Mediterranean Sea.

Abdulrahman Milad of #Zawiyah was assassinated. He was also known as al-#Bidja (a nickname inspired by his passion for football and the Italian player Baggio). Bidja gained international notoriety in 2017 due to his prominent role in using violence against migrants and involvement in smuggling operations connected to the Nasr Brigade (Awlad Buhmira tribe).
After a short imprisonment under Interior Minister Bashagha, Bidja later adopted a seemingly virtuous anti-crime stance. He frequently spoke out against fuel smuggling operations out of Zuwarah and cultivated a more formal Coast Guard image.
