I don't know Natasha's work, so this is not specifically about her, but she articulates a common sentiment — a pushback I hear often about "culture war" and those (like @jdgreear , apparently — though I haven't read his book) who are cautioning Christians against it.
It fundamentally misunderstands or misrepresents what many Christians who have critiqued the culture war (including James Davison Hunter and Keller) are saying. The point is not that Christians retreat from the public square, avoid politics, and refuse to engage in the discourse about what's good for society.
Rather, for people like Hunter and Keller, it's a question of what is the most effective approach for actually effecting cultural change.
When Christians focus primarily on grasping for power, motivating voters by fear and resentment, fomenting anxiety, and creating "us versus them" cultural dichotomies, it hurts their moral credibility and witness. Short term wins aren't worth the long term losses.
Yesterday was a perfect example. Evangelicals saw an alliance with Trump as a shortcut to political power. But to gain it, they had to blinker themselves to his obvious views on the pro-life issue. We got a conservative supreme court — terrific — but we also got an ethically bankrupt HHS, and approval of a generic version of the abortion pill. Most abortions are already chemical. They will now be cheaper and more readily available, despite questionable science on its safety for mothers.
The point is not "You should have voted for Kamala" — something I've never once said. The point is also not "retreat from the public square and leave politics to everyone else," something none of those who've critiqued culture warring have said. The point is that the church's ability to be a prophetic witness in a culture of death is severely harmed when the priority becomes short term political victories, mobilizing like a mass movement, and a political strategy that is entirely defined by the pursuit of power.
The alternative — which again, doesn't mean abandoning the public square — is to focus on building strong institutions, focusing on the formation of Christians who embody Christian virtue, pursuing a kind of vocational excellence that brings Christians into elite institutions where they can influence and effect change, and strengthening our churches and churches' witness by serving our communities in ways that only the church can really mobilize to do.
