In Anne of the Island, Anne Shirley muses that she would like a man who “COULD be wicked, and WOULDN’T”—This is not a preference for weakness or blandness. Rather, she imagines someone with genuine capacity for mischief or rebellion, but who deliberately chooses restraint.
The allure lies in the paradox: strength that could transgress, yet refuses. His goodness is not accidental—it is intentional, chosen against the grain of possibility.
Let’s talk about the Biblical concept of meekness, which carries a strikingly similar paradox:
• Hebrew (ʿanav): Often translated as humble or lowly, it describes one who yields to God’s authority, even when they could assert themselves.
• Greek (praus): In the New Testament, meekness means power under control. It is not weakness, but disciplined strength—like a trained horse whose energy is directed by its master.
• Jesus’ Beatitude (Matthew 5:5): “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” Here, meekness is exalted as a kingdom virtue: those who restrain their power in trust of God will receive the ultimate inheritance.
The Parallel:
• Anne’s ideal man: Could be ‘wicked’, but wouldn’t.
• The meek: Could assert power or act according to their own will, but won’t.
Both celebrate deliberate restraint. The virtue lies not in incapacity but in the conscious choice to hold back and even act in opposition to how they might instinctively wish to act.
Why? To submit to the Most High and choose goodness, even when your flesh doesn’t want you to. True nobility is found in the tension between potential and refusal.
Important to note 👉 Weakness cannot be meekness. Meekness is strength under restraint. it takes discipline.
