Today is the International Day of Solidarity with Political Prisoners in Belarus. It is the day when political activist Vitold Ashurak died in prison in 2021. If we don't take action, many more can die behind bars. Please join us today & make sure that political prisoners are not forgotten. Here are some actions you can take: ▪️ Hold solidarity pickets with Belarusian political prisoners in your cities & towns. Invite former political prisoners to speak at these pickets or record video addresses. ▪️ Encourage local media in your cities & towns to share the stories of Belarus' political prisoners so that more people know about repressions in the country. ▪️ Write letters & take patronage over political prisoners in Belarus. Visit the website of the Viasna Human Rights Center (https://t.co/O25vR7IvAJ) to find out more about political prisoners. Send letters online using Solidarity Postcards Atelier (https://t.co/0QmEmSSPL3) or письмо.бел (https://t.co/siQAZQ4hBO). Donate to help volunteers, send care packages to political prisoners – and in exchange, you may get a postcard, tote bag, or T-shirt from the Freedom Postcards initiative. ▪️ Share this video guide about writing letters to political prisoners in Belarus: https://t.co/Y1fV7uNElG ▪️ Demand that human rights defenders, lawyers, relatives & international organizations can visit prisons. Demand that persecution of lawyers in Belarus stops & political prisoners can exercise their right to defense. ▪️ Organize meetings of released political prisoners with members of your countries' governments. ▪️ Take patronage over a political prisoner in Belarus and become their “godparent.” You can do it on the Libereco website right now: https://t.co/Jd2EDiNFCa ▪️ Speak out on your social media on the situation with political prisoners in Belarus & condemn the regime. For example, on May 8, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Marija Pejčinović Burić expressed condolences regarding the death of Mikalai Klimovich on Twitter. ▪️ Go to the website of the Viasna Human Rights Center (https://t.co/O25vR7IvAJ), find the number of political prisoners & write a post on your social media with one short sentence: “There are ___ political prisoners in Belarus.” Use the #StandWithBelarus hashtag. ▪️ Support Belarusians by encouraging the people in your country to donate to foundations that help political prisoners & their families – A Country to Live in (https://t.co/T9Yix9oNYy), BySol (https://t.co/6g51J5UMoy), or #BY_help (https://t.co/CJlBYVqDN5). #StandWithBelarus
