▶️ Typically, 1-2 km in diameter and 100-500 meters thick, it consists of supercooled water droplets or ice crystals, giving it a translucent, milky white to pale blue hue with sharp edges and minimal vertical development.
Its lenticular shape results from stable, stratified air layers, and it may display colorful halos from diffraction if thin enough.
Pileus clouds are short-lived (minutes to an hour), dissipating as the underlying cloud's updraft weakens or pierces through it, serving as a visual harbinger of severe weather potential in convective systems.
▶️ Pileus clouds develop in environments with strong vertical instability and abundant low-level moisture, typically during the explosive growth phase of cumulus clouds in warm, humid afternoons.
As the cumulus updraft accelerates (speeds >10 m/s), it forces a parcel of stable, moist air aloft over the bulging cloud top like a wave over a rock.
This air cools rapidly via adiabatic expansion (lapse rate ~9.8°C/km), reaching dew point and condensing into a thin cloud cap at the level of free convection.
The pileus remains stationary relative to the rising turret due to momentum, but upper-level winds may shear it horizontally.
If the updraft persists, it can erode or lift the cap, potentially evolving into an anvil if part of a thunderstorm.
This orographic lift analog highlights the transition from fair-weather cumuli to towering cumulonimbus, common in tropical or mid-latitude convective outbreaks.

Tuesday afternoon (2022-09-13), the summit was under a cap cloud for about 40 minutes. Weather Observer, Hayden Pearson, captured this #timelapse view of it as it flowed over the summit and Ball Crag prior to flowing down into the Great Gulf to our north.
