Pretty cold cardback from @Topps circa 1969. I love #CareerCapper cards but a cartoon depiction of the fired #Senators manager leaving w/ bag packed is a bit harsh! 😂
Just got my all-time #CareerCapper card in the mail this weekend. #TheMick didn’t announce his retirement until 3/1/69 so thankfully @Topps had created this gem giving us the #Yankees icon’s final stat line…sitting at #3 on all-time HR list & the painful .298 career BA.
I often lament the lack of #CareerCapper cards, but the fact that everyone was hoping JR could return to ⚾️ enabled him to not only get a full complement of 1981 cards (capping his career), but also even a 1982 #Topps issue despite being on the DL all of ‘81. #DoneWayTooSoon

But typically, if they knew the player had retired/wasn’t playing the yr of the card printing, they didn’t make one. Their cards were for THAT yr vs covering the previous as so many of us think of.🤷♂️
I often lament #Topps’ lack of #CareerCapper cards. Why not a ‘64 Musial, ‘72 Banks, ‘74 Mays, ‘77 Aaron or ‘80 Munson w/ final career stat line? Uncertainty due to injury provides rare exception. Got this #Yankees lefty 2 cards after his final MLB pitch in ‘78 & #TheBird an ‘81.

Last @Topps card w/ #TheCaptain. I remember pulling this in summer of ‘80 hunting to see if Thurman (seated far left) was on it. Was strange since he’d been gone almost a yr. But I still wish Topps made #CareerCapper cards in general including a normal ‘80 for #Tugboat. #Yankees
@TwinsAlmanac @Topps1988 Ha!! 😂😜 No bias at all in your request huh? My biggest beef re: cards is how they typically skip the #CareerCapper. So Willie Mays retires after ‘73 season - give me the ‘74 Mays to cap it all off! Ditto Hank in ‘77, Killebrew in ‘76, etc. And especially a Thurman in ‘80!😖
@sultan_of_stats @paddy0_bronx Yes, there’s no doubt you’re right on the timing being the key. I just wish Topps wouldn’t look only at active players in current issue yr. Give me that #CareerCapper w/ final stat line on bottom for the great players (‘74 Mays, ‘78 B Robinson, ‘88 Reggie, ‘77 Aaron, etc.).
