Pete Buttigieg would make an exceptional president—his intelligence, composure, and vision are undeniable.
But as much as I admire him, I worry about the hurdles he’d face. France has Gabriel Attal, a brilliant openly gay leader, —Attal will win in 2027, I predict. —but America’s political landscape feels different.
Too many voters still hesitate to back a candidate based on identity—whether it’s gender, as we’ve seen with women candidates, or, in Pete’s case, his personal life.
The criticism wouldn’t be about his qualifications; it would be about “lifestyle”, under some other coded excuse.
I hope the Democrats avoid misreading the room again, as they’ve done before. And I hope Pete, with his sharp instincts, sees the bigger picture and picks his moment carefully.
With so much uncertainty—midterms, 2028, the state of our elections—why risk a fight that’s not yet winnable? Pete’s time will come, but rushing in now might not be the play. Stay strategic, Pete. @PeteButtigieg @TheDemocrats
