#Kirātārjuniya is an epic poem by #Bharavi, written in #Sanskrit, 6th c. describing the combat between Arjuna and Shiva. Known for gravity of meaning, forceful and sometimes playful expression demonstrating linguistic feats. 15th canto contains #chitrakavya —ancient Indian tradition of writing poetry in visual patterns by play of meaning (#shabdalankāra) (based in brilliant flexible play of vowels, consonants, words and sound). Then it has #sarvatobhadra, "good from every direction” each line verse is unchanged when read vertically down or up.

It takes someone years of practice to do something like #chitrakavya, live on stage. 🙏 I have seen random people say "What's the use of poetry/literature" etc & ridicuing Indian artforms as #AvadhanaThe same people are seen writing long write-ups about cricket players ;-)

An ‘kavitta’ verse by Bhatta Mathuranatha Shastri: 8 lines in 8 different languages. Scene: An elephant arrives in Johri Bazaar in Jaipur. 1 speaker each of English, Persian, Bengali, Gujarati, Braja, Marwari, Marathi, and Sanskrit speak one line each of the poem. #Chitrakavya
