Bobi Wine: The People's President ★★★ "What do the homosexuals got to do with it." #ChristopherSharp and #MosesBwayo's Oscar nominated documentary delivers a hopeful message about change in Uganda, featuring scenes set to Bobi Wine’s protest songs with sing-along lyrics. Yet, it doesn't shy away from depicting the corruption and violence under President Yoweri Museveni. The film opens with a harrowing assassination attempt that results in the death of Bobi Wine’s driver, while subsequent arrests lead to riots marked by gunfire. I knew very little about Uganda and it's politics, so this was a real eye-opener for me. Sadly it's a familiar story around the world. Like the case of Navalny in Russia, Bobi Wine challenges a dictator who in returns uses violent tactics. This doc reveals the harsh realities of Uganda, highlighting the government's insistence on holding elections during the COVID-19 pandemic and the siege imposed on Bobi Wine, including a nationwide internet blackout. Bobi Wine: The People's President serves as a stark reminder of global corruption and violence but also showcases the courage of those willing to fight for democracy. While its disturbing content and lack of cinematic flair may not appeal to everyone, it remains a compelling film worth watching.
