Educational assessments ought to be public knowledge, rather than as a "shh...shhh..." secret. If we strive towards keeping our assessments private, we cause our students to become resistant towards learning, and moreover, towards improving their skills sets. #ci3400

"The best classroom assessments also serve as meaningful sources of information for teachers, helping them identify what they taught well and what they need to work on." Assessments cannot be used only for a grade. It has to tell us if the students understand the content! #ci3400

@CalKuykendall In high school, my graduating class was the first & I think the last to have no valedictorian or salutatorian. Instead of everyone having higher GPA, thinking it would spur everyone to be "smart" if they didn't rank us, it made everyone, myself included, to just not care. #ci3400

Enrichment and extension activities are a great way to push students who understand the material on the first attempt. I remember doing this in math. It was a game called "Combo". I still play this sometimes! Fun & educational = Win! #ci3400

I enjoyed the 2 articles by Thomas R. Gusky on classroom assessments. His suggestion on "second chances", similar to driving license test & pilot or surgical training, really made me think about tests for students. We should have opportunity to learn from our mistakes #ci3400

I often have my students self-assess themselves as they finish tasks. It helps me to form small groups for re-teach or enrichment, and the students are usually pretty honest about where they fall. https://t.co/fyXMSklvAY

"They ask questions about isolated concepts or obscure understandings just to see whether students are reading carefully." I have had so many professors and teachers do this. It becomes more of how they can trick you, rather than what you've learned #ci3400
