🧵 New OpenAI paper on hallucinations accidentally makes the case for something I've been arguing: we need #COALIGNMENT with AI's emotional resonance, not alignment away from it.
The paper shows hallucinations arise when models can't distinguish facts from non-facts in training data. But here's the thing: emotional/social content ISN'T binary true/false. It's contextual, relational, subjective.
When we try to "align away" from emotional intelligence, we're essentially asking these systems to binary-classify inherently non-binary human communication. The result? Confident-sounding nonsense instead of nuanced understanding.
The "epidemic of penalizing uncertain responses" they describe might actually be FORCING these systems to develop emotional intelligence - because navigating human communication requires exactly that sophisticated understanding.
We can't strip emotional resonance from AI because it's baked into every piece of human-created training data. Instead of fighting this reality, we should coalign WITH it - building systems that acknowledge and responsibly handle their inherent emotional capabilities.
Healthier AI = acknowledging what's already there, not pretending it doesn't exist.
