@ScottishMuseums The shoe was found in the rafters of a house in #Pittenweem and we believe it illustrates the practice of hiding things in parts of the house thought to be most likely for witches to enter. The #concealedobjects act as a decoy to divert the witch or bad spirit's attention away..

Yesterday I visited a site in the Bredon area of Glos where two shoes and a goat bone with an incised cross on it have been discovered. The part of the building where they were found is 17th century and also has a nice amount of deliberate burn marks upstairs around a doorway.

@OxonMuseum I learnt the term "apotropaic" from @sarajcrofts & @folkmagicman when I looked after a #Tudor concealed shoe found hidden in a house. European folklore like this is fascinating. #ConcealedObjects
