#Conserve2 @IroroTanshi standing up for #Afrotropical #bats! Great presentation, beautiful bats and important work!
1/5 #WBTC #Conserve2 Tropical bats are uber diverse! Early studies suggest that Afrotropical 🦇 fauna are species poor. But are they?
To test this, we used contemporary techniques that target different 🦇 ensembles. We trappped bats in Africa’s largest bat diversity hotspot.

#Conserve2 Really great presentation from my fellow 🔊#deterrent researcher @SaraPWeaver with some encouraging results for @nrgsystems 🔊 #deterrents use at wind turbines! #mitigation #HWC
2 #WBTC1 #Conserve2: We tested an acoustic deterrent for reducing bat fatalities at 16 wind turbines during fall 2017 & 2018 in Texas, USA. These devices produce high-intensity ultrasound from 20 to 50 kHz, intended to deter #bats from flying near the spinning blades.@nrgsystems
4 #WBTC1 #Conserve2 After builded the predictive models, we compared 3 bat infected species against the 15 mexican bat species @BatConIntl @Bioconciencia__ @UNAM_MX
Only 5 species of mexican bats showed similarity to 2 bat species infected with #WNS

I just compared 🦇🦇 diversity between the Afrotropics and Southeast Asia. #WBTC1 #Conserve2.
Is this my life now? Loving one and fighting to make the other better know?
Well, that's the entire #BatWC2020, isn't it?
Vote #hammerheads.

A wind turbine uses wind 💨 to make electricity💡. Dr @SaraPWeaver looks into mitigation/solution to the problem of bats getting killed by these wind turbines.
They tested ultrasonic acoustic deterrents, see what they found https://t.co/a52FtK3M97
1 #WBTC1 #Conserve2: Bats🦇are killed by wind turbines worldwide, but wind energy is a vital #renewableenergy source for curbing greenhouse gases. Mitigating solutions are limited with some (i.e. curtailment) reducing power generation thereby lessening climate change benefits.

Yafhed Martínez studies if Mexican bats are threatened by the disease, White-nose syndrome. WNS is caused by fungus that may have been dispersed to different countries by humans.

1 #WBTC1 #Conserve2 #Bats are the only flying #mammals, are important in many ecological processes, as #pollinators, #seeddispersers and #insectpredators. Many bat species act as reservoirs of #diseases, however some manage to affect them, the #Whitenosesyndrome. #GiveBatsABreak

Well what a fantastic way to end #Conserve2 ! @IroroTanshi has shown us how limited sampling can misrepresent diversity! Brilliant work to show just how amazing Bat diversity is and how we can improve our sampling methods! Great work, keep it up !! #Batfans 🦇🦇🦇 #WBTC1
5/5 #WBTC #Conserve2 To answer our question, Afrotropical bats are not depauperate! Previously established patterns are likely due to limited sampling that under-represented forest understorey 🦇🦇🦇. We reiterate the value of contemporary techniques in tropical 🦇 surveys.

4/5 #WBTC #Conserve2 Our results differ from Findley (1993) because we had access to harp trap captures across both tropical sub-regions. Harp traps target forest understorey 🦇🦇🦇 that evade mist nets. 99% of all understorey bats from our study area were captured in harp traps.

3/5 #WBTC #Conserve2 How did our sites compare to those in Southeast Asia (SEA)? We estimated (rarefaction) species richness of lowland forest understorey 🦇🦇. Alpha div. of bats from our sites in Nigeria was comparable with those in Indonesia, but div. was highest in Malaysia.

2/5 #WBTC #Conserve2 Between 2015-2019, we caught 🦇 in harp traps and mist nets in unlogged forests in southeastern Nigeria. We compared our survey to 🦇 abundance data from two sites in Indonesia and one in Malaysia - compiled from published/unpublished sources.

Bringing the #Conserve2 session to its end, we have the incredible Iroro Tanshi @IroroTanshi here! 🦇 'Afrotropical bats are not depauperate: comparable diversity patterns between West Africa and Southeast Asia' ~ What a topic!! 🌍🌏 #WBTC1
@TitiC12 and @AngieTS13 's work is fascinating! It is great to see how #fruitbats 🦇 support forest dynamics - especially for these protected areas! Keep up the great work! #WBTC1 #Conserve2
5 #WBTC1 #Conserve2 C. brevicauda is the best disperser and the key species, C. moritzianus had not been recorded in the B diet literature. These species could be taken in mind for the restoration processes in the area. We thank @ParquesColombia, @UniversidadCES and @IDEAWIL

4 #WBTC1 #Conserve2 This work on the diet of #fruitbats is the 1st to be carried out at ANULE. This new information that gives us an idea of the importance of research within protected areas. In the interaction network there’re generalist species with limited associations

3 #WBTC1 #Conserve2 We captured 290 #fruitbats belonging to 10 spp of Phyllostomidae. The most abundant were C. brevicauda (187), D. glauca (48) and A. planirostris (16). We identified 16 morphospecies of seeds: Piper, V. baccifera and C. moritzianus were the most representative

2 #WBTC1 #Conserve2 We work in the ANULE (Colombia) belonging to @ParquesColombia, it’s pre-mountainous dry forest with sub-xerophytic vegetation. Mist nets were used to catch the B and the seeds obtained from the excreta were collected for identification at @UniversidadCES

1 #WBTC1 #Conserve2 @AngieTS13 Knowing the diet of 🦇 is important to understand how the assembly is formed and how they can contribute to the dynamics of the forests. E.g is their function as seed dispersing agents, 🦇 are considered effective dispersers of approx 549 🌿 species
